If you give a Moose a MuffinImprove Sentence Fluency with your Students
while Helping other Students
Greetings!

During our TWT 101 training, we talk about the trait of Sentence Fluency.  We discuss the importance of students learning to write a variety of simple, If you take a mouse to the moviescompound, and complex sentences.  We also stress the importance of beginning sentences in different ways.

Additionally, we teach our Core 4 topic sentences, as well as emphasize the importance of a variety of transitions.

Currently Kohl's Department Stores are offering a great tool for helping discuss all of these strategies with your students.  As the current offering in the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, you may purchase four of Laura Numeroff's most popular titles for only $5 each:

If you give a cat a cupcake
If You Give a Moose a Muffin
If You Take a Mouse To The Movies
If You Give a Cat a Cupcake
If You Give a Pig a Party

These humorous picture books make great read-alouds for our Level 1 learners, and teach many basic vocabulary concepts in a subtle way.  Level 2 and Level 3 learners will enjoy studying the author's use of various sentence structures. They will also develop an ear for the rhythm and cadence of the Situation/Stance topic sentence by the time you finish reading this book aloud.
  • If you give a pig a partyAre students able to identify the various types of sentences?  (simple, compound, complex)
  • Are students able to identify the author's use of transition words?
  • How does the author set up the text in a circle using cause and effect?
  • Do you have writers that can imitate Ms. Numeroff's style, and write their own "If You Give" book?

Your students can have a lot of fun with these colorful, hardcover books, and your purchase will contribute to a cause that promotes childrens literacy.

Sincerely,
