Knock the Socks Off Your Principal!
Greetings!

If this is your observation/evaluation year, remember to plan a research-based lesson. It will impress your principal if you cite the research you used in your post-observation conference (make sure you have a copy of the research with you).
Try a "Writing Next" Recommendation
Consider basing your lesson on one or more of the "Writing Next" Recommendations. (2007, Carnegie Corporation)

Remember these Eleven Recommendations? (If not, click here to access the report.)

  1. Writing Strategies--consistent, systematic, explicit instruction.

  2. Summarization--"high yield strategy"...best check of comprehension. (Robert Marzano)

  3. Collaborative Writing--small groups do full writing process together.

  4. Specific Product Goals--have students create kid-friendly rubrics.

  5. Word Processing--full writing process at computer.

  6. Sentence Combining--actively model compound and complex sentences.

  7. Prewriting--time spent planning is time well spent.

  8. Inquire Activities--choose topic, pose questions, do research, then write.

  9. Process Writing Approach--sometimes it's OK to practice parts of the writing process based on information assessment of student needs.

  10. Study of Models--show strong examples, then analyze for one or two aspects.

  11. Writing for Content Learning--deliberately weave writing into content areas.
Consider combining several of these into one lesson.

Here's How
Create a lesson on planning a summary, using content area material. You model the strategy, show kids a strong student sample, and then analyze it. Follow this with a small group activity to practice the new skill.

VOILA! You've covered Recommendations 2, 3, 7, 9, 10 and 11!colorful socks

With a lesson like that, those socks should be flying!!
