Greetings!

Strong word choice is valued in all sorts of writing, both narrative and expository.  If we expect our students to improve the word choice in their writing, we need to help build their vocabularies.  Picture books provide excellent opportunities to expose students to both new words and the idea of playing around with language. Our trainers have some favorites you might enjoy sharing with your students.

cover of feathers and foolsFeathers and Fools by Mem Fox is a quick read aloud that uses an array of interesting adjectives including words like magnificent, profound, anxious, and elegant.  Double Trouble in Walla Walla by Andrew Clements takes word play to a new level.  Students are exposed to words like hodge-podge, topsy-turvy, chit-chat, and yakety-yak which are woven into a hilarious story and model the fun that writers can cover of fancy nancyhave experimenting with language.  Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor describes a young "glamour queen" who finds herself living in a boring world which she is trying to make more "fancy".  Along the way, she learns vocabulary words (posh, parfait, stupendous) that help her family become more "fancy".  Picture books that focus on improving word choice easily apply to all levels of learners.  Begin collecting books with outstanding word choice that you can use for frequent mini-lessons with your students.
