Shalom! There is no doubt that when we begin our job as parents, we have great intentions. We read the "What to Expect" books, but very few of us are actually educated about parenting BEFORE we become parents. We enter parenthood with memories of our own upbringing. We vow to use what worked for us and change what did not- "I will never do that to my own child." We all love our children and truly want what is best for them, but then life gets in the way. We make mistakes. We ALL make mistakes. Lucky for us, young children are amazingly tolerant and forgiving. Even after a rough day, they will snuggle up and look at us with eyes filled with love and trust. What we need to remember is to look directly back into those adoring eyes, touch those sweet faces, and be 100% present in those moments. It sounds simple, but do we really do it? Mounting research claims that this emotional, responsive, and loving connection between parent and child is critical to healthy development. Family schedules are extremely busy. Parents work long hours. Life stresses challenge and distract us from our most important responsibility as parents- to make positive emotional connections with our children. As we plan next week's schedule for our families, let's block out several times a day to fit in hugging and kissing, singing and dancing, hand-holding, reading, snuggling, and complimenting our children. Let's make time to block out the distractions, get down on their level, hold their sticky hands, and look directly into their eyes when we tell them we love them. Schedule these times! The benefits of your emotionally healthy relationship will last a lifetime. While you have your calendars out... starting January 18, Dr. Judy Levin, will present a 4-week workshop for parents who want to learn more about the connection between healthy social/emotional development and successful children. The classes will run from 7:30-9:00 a.m. so all of our working parents can attend. Full day children will go right into their classrooms and part time students will just start their day a little early. Please plan to make arrangements to attend. What you learn from Judy in four days will positively impact your family for a lifetime. The workshop is open to the community, so please share the information with your friends and have them contact me at karend@orlandojcc.org. Sincerely, Karen Duncan, Director of Shayna's Village | |

It Takes a Village!
Hello! My name is Bridget Hawley and I am a volunteer in Shayna's Village. Each month I would like to introduce you to someone who is teaching or working closely with us in Shayna's Village. This month, I am so excited to share with you a little about Katie Werner. She is an incredible teacher that my children had the opportunity to know and love!
If you have a three or four-year-old that has attended a Shayna's Village class, chances are you have met one of our AMAZING teachers, Katie Werner. Katie has been teaching at the JCC for 6 years. While you will see her most often with the part time 3s group, she can also be spotted helping out in the baby rooms in the morning and in Shayna's Village in the afternoon.
Katie is a mom to Haile, who is three and also a student at the JCC. Katie knows what her parents are going through every day, because she is going through it too! In addition, Katie has her degree in Early Childhood Education.
In Shayna's Village, Katie can most often be seen teaching the Mind and Manners classes from noon to two. She joins her children for lunch every day, and together they practice using their manners and social skills. After lunch, it's time for FUN! On some days it's hard to tell who is enjoying the class more, the children or Katie!
If you ask a parent who has been lucky enough to have Katie as a teacher, they will tell you she has an infinite amount of patience and a forever-positive attitude. Children make mistakes, they have accidents, they don't always listen, but Katie has a quiet way of helping them grow and blossom into children who are confident in themselves and can communicate their feelings and needs.
Because she teaches everything from cooking to gardening to drama, Katie has a wealth of cool, fun, educational ideas for children. If you peek into Shayna's Village, you may find her cooking blueberry muffins or singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" on the Karaoke machine!!! No matter what she is doing, you can guarantee the children are having a blast!
Shayna's Village is truly lucky to have such a wonderful teacher! We hope you enjoy the classes you have with her!

Remembering Shayna...
 | |
Matt, Justin and Shayna Presser
|
Shayna Cai Presser was a preschooler when she died of cancer in the early 1990s.
Her time spent at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland, however, led her parents to establish a place there in her honor with an endowment fund.
Shayna would have been 20 years old this year.

|
Shayna's Village is located within the Early Childhood Learning Center at the Roth JCC Maitland Campus. When your child begins in our preschool, your entire family joins the JCC family. Both moms and dads make new friends through our fitness center and classes, sports leagues, arts programs, and family events. At the JCC, the entire family makes friends for life.
