Shayna's Village at the JCC

Shalom!

I am supposed to be writing about early literacy and how reading to your child at an early age is connected to academic success.  Literacy skills and language begin at birth so introduce books early.  Don't wait!  (The amazing Jan Parish is going to be in Shayna's Village to explain all of this in great detail.  Please don't miss her workshop!  I am not kidding when I say her simple suggestions can change the course of the way your child thinks and learns.)

Reading to children benefits their developing minds, it's true, but there is more, and that is what I'd like to talk about here.

As I started to reminisce about reading to my boys when they were young, I was flooded with memories.   Visions of favorite book covers and illustrations splashed around my brain.  I called both of my boys, apologized for the randomness of the conversation, and forced them to share their earliest memories of all of us reading together.  After some hesitation, they both humored me, knowing full well they didn't have a chance of distracting me from "another one of those mom things."

I am happy to report that it didn't take long for them to start rattling off titles and memories with enthusiasm that matched mine.  There were lots of "wows" and "oh, yeahs" as we helped each other remember.  It was clear that none of us had thought about those days for a long time.  Eventually, the separate conversations ended in agreement- those were happy, treasured times.

So, yes, reading to your children is very important... for more than just academic reasons.

What strikes me now, 20 years later, is how much we bonded over those books.  Talking about them brought back so many memories of scrunching into one bed, laughing, snuggling up, and winding down our long day together.  We share those memories and no one can take them away from us.  As my youngest pointed out, "I don't remember every detail vividly, but the feelings are there.  C'mon, mom, you know what I mean.  You either have them or you don't.  You're either in or you're out."  I am so glad to say I am all in!

Below is a short list of book titles we collectively agreed were our favorites:

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell

Owl Babies by Martin Wadell

The Witch's Hand by Peter Utton

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by John Scieszka and Lane Smith

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Once Around the Block by Kevin Henkes

Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg

Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car and Mr. Gumpy's Outing by John Burningham

Arnie and the Stolen Markers by Nancy Carlson

And the one I still can't get through without crying, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Sincerely,

   Karen Duncan Signature

Hello!  My name is Bridget Hawley and I am a volunteer in Shayna's Village.   Each month I would like to introduce you to someone who is teaching or working closely with us in Shayna's Village.  This month, many of you will recognize the individual we are spotlighting and I hope you will enjoy learning a little more about her.

Jan Parish2

Jan Parish, M.Ed., is a nationally-known early childhood consultant and speaker with twenty-four years experience as an author, teacher, and early literacy specialist.

As a working mother of four, Jan understands the challenges modern parents face as they cope in today's fast-paced, multi-tasking world.  And she also understands how parents feel stressed by educational and cultural expectations that pressure their children to achieve early.

Her empathy for parents motivates her to share her extensive experience and knowledge about how children learn to talk, read, write, and think well in their earliest years.

Jan conducts popular presentations on best practices in early literacy, offering practical ideas both at-home and working parents can easily incorporate into their daily routines.

She shows parents how they can catapult their children into school success without adding to their already burdened schedules or purchasing expensive software programs and "educational" toys.

Jan's ideas are enthusiastically received by parents so inspired they don't want to leave at the end of the session. Parents and teachers alike appreciate the depth of her knowledge, her easy-to-use, practical advice, and her dynamic, engaging speaking style.

Lisa K. says...

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed your workshop and can't wait to go back to the JCC in the spring... Now that we're getting settled into our new home, I'll be able to read them the other books I ordered off of your reading list. What a huge gift that list is!!! It really does make all the difference to read the appropriate material. I'm so excited to see what Miles and Campbell get excited about next and I can't thank you enough for sharing all of this wonderful information!!!

Look very forward to seeing you in November.

Stacy N. says...

Words cannot express how thankful I am for this program. It has meant everything to me and my children. I have learned how to talk to my children and how to encourage them to speak to me. In just a few weeks my son is already singing to me! He is also making up new words to songs! He never sang before and now he loves it and comforts his baby brother in song. Thank you so much. Our lives are forever changed for the better.  Thank you, Jan!

Jodi H. says...

You have inspired me to educate my children every day in everything I do. My husband and I believe it is our responsibility to foster a love of learning in our children. You have given us the inspiration and the valuable tools to do so.

I can't thank you enough. My mind has been transformed into the mind of an "everyday learner," and hopefully, that will transfer to my girls!

Elmarie M. says...

It was wonderful to hear in words what my husband and I believe about young children and learning. You confirmed that a love of books, not technology, brings forth technology!

Melinda P. says...

Everyday Learning & Literacy has taught me to be more patient with my children.  This program has given me insight into how young children learn and grow. I now have the right resources and information for my children to help them with their learning.  Thank you, Jan.

Heather S. says...

I am a first time parent of 20 month boy/girl twins. Although I have a BS degree in Health Education, other than babysitting jobs when I was young, I had no early education experience. Your workshop program was inspiring, empowering, motivating and, of course, educational. You gave me practical ideas on how I can help my children learn better each and every day. Thank you!

Terri C. says...

With your Everyday Learning & Literacy program I have a framework in how I approach and foster my child's development. I feel more confident in raising a well-adjusted, successful, "good learner". I love all the ideas for different activities that are easy to do. I can impart this information to my husband, friends, and family so we can all participate in developing an inquisitive, analytical child.

Sounds like I'm going to be learning a lot about animals & nature and enhancing my own vocabulary! I'm tired of just learning about different kinds of trucks! Thank you!

Jill G. says...

This workshop was amazing! I learned so much and have told all my friends and family about the program. Every parent of children birth to age 5 can benefit

from taking Everyday Learning & Literacy. Jan is full of energy, passion, and incredible knowledge.

Julie O. says...

Your quote, "Positive parenting is hard & Punitive parenting is easy" has changed the way I parent on a day to day basis. I love the phrases "You can do it" and "You did it." They have entered my everyday vocabulary. There are now a lot fewer battles and yelling as I keep your positive parenting points in my mind everyday.

Bridget H. says...

This workshop program has given me confidence as a parent. Now I know that I don't have to worry if my children have memorized the alphabet. I have learned how to give them a love of learning by being a great mom!

Jennifer D. says...

This program was refreshing and energizing. Great ideas, great motivation!

Remembering Shayna...

Matt, Justin and Shayna Presser
Matt, Justin and Shayna Presser

Shayna Cai Presser was a preschooler when she died of cancer in the early 1990s.

Her time spent at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland, however, led her parents to establish a place there in her honor with an endowment fund.

Shayna would have been 20 years old this year.

Shayna's Village is located within the Early Childhood Learning Center at the Roth JCC Maitland Campus.  When your child begins in our preschool, your entire family joins the JCC family. Both moms and dads
make new friends through our fitness center and classes, sports leagues, arts programs, and family events. At the JCC, the entire family makes friends for life.
