UNDERSTANDING FACELIFTS
None of us can escape the effects of aging on our appearance. Inevitably, gravity, the elements, nature and physical factors including weight changes take their toll. With today's emphasis on fitness and health maintenance a growing number of patients are taking the attitude that there is no good reason to look older than we feel. Facelift surgery is one of the most common procedures for reducing the signs of aging in the face and neck. A good facelift is designed to lift as well as tighten sagging in the lower face as well as tighten and smooth the neck area. A properly performed facelift will significantly improve joweling, refine the jawline and improve the overall shape and "posture" of the face, restoring a more youthful heart shaped appearance that is associated with youth. However, with the proliferation of information and techniques, many patients are confused as to the type of facelift that is appropriate. For example, a relatively simple mini-lift without additional liposuction and tightening of the muscles might be appropriate in a younger patient, whereas a full facelift and necklift with adjunctive liposuction or additional procedures such as fat transfer may be appropriate in a more advanced situation. Many times adjunctive procedures such as liposuction, fat transfer and laser resurfacing greatly enhance the outcome of a facelift operation. In addition, these procedures add significant longevity to the end result. Recovery times are directly related to the extent of the surgery and the adjunctive procedures that are performed, but in general most patients are able to be back in public in a week to 10 days with makeup, whereas social events may take up to two weeks or more.
As a board certified and experienced facial plastic surgeon Dr. Putman is familiar with all types of facelift techniques and can perform them with expertise. He teaches facelift surgery to residents and other physicians in training and facelifts comprise a large portion of his surgical practice. He willingly shares his results with patients and other surgeons and often is involved in instructional courses in facelift surgery at the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery meetings.
A good first start to explore facelift surgery is a consultation with Dr. Putman. He will only recommend procedures he feels are beneficial to you and the consultation provides a significant educational experience for the prospective patient. You may see examples of facelift results from Dr. Putman during the consultation and also may visit his website to view before and after results. If you are considering facelift surgery or any other facial plastic or reconstructive procedure consider a consultation with Dr. Putman as your first step. Trust your face to a specialist of the face.

| MICRODERMABRASION VS. PEELS
I am often asked what the differences between microdermabrasion and peels are.
I'll start with their similarities. Both microdermabrasion and peels remove the superficial "dead" layer of skin. In general, both procedures are similar in the sense that they improve the skin's texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, pores, age spots, mild acne scarring, and help control active acne. By removing the dead skin, home-care products penetrate better, increasing their effectiveness.
They both take about a half an hour, and they are priced the same - $125 for one treatment, $325 for a series of three.
The main difference is that microdermabrasion is a manual exfoliation - we use a diamond tipped wand to break up the skin's surface, and a vacuum on the machine sucks away the dead skin and debris. The exfoliation is immediate, with no down time. Peels are a chemical exfoliation - they use different acids to loosen dead cells from the skin's surface. Unlike microdermabrasion, there is some down time - depending on the peel it can be mild flaking for a few days to peeling for about a week.
The advantage of microdermabrasion is that there is no down time, makeup can be applied immediately. The advantage of peels is that they are much more customizable than microdermabrasion. With over 50 different combinations of peels, there is one for every skin type and condition.
I generally recommend an exfoliating treatment every four to six weeks to keep the skin healthy and glowing. If there is a problem that needs to be corrected, exfoliations can be done more frequently. Unless there is a reason that a client can't get one treatment or the other, I encourage my clients to try both and see which one they prefer.
For someone who needs a deeper exfoliation, a combined microdermabrasion/peel can be performed.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Do your muscles feel like this? Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that concentrates on rearranging deeper tissue layers of the muscles and connective tissues. Reminiscent of the Swedish massage, this massage utilizes many of the same movements and techniques, though the pressure is usually more. Some of its strokes also resemble classic massage therapy, however, its movements are slow and the pressure is intense on tense areas. Deep tissue massage is especially useful for persistently tense and contracted areas, for example, stiff neck, lower back stiffness and sore shoulders. The main purpose of the massage is both corrective and therapeutic. It is aimed for loosening the fibers of a muscle, while releasing deeply held patterns of tension and toxins, thereby providing relaxation and rejuvenation
Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
- One of the most popular benefits of deep tissue massage is that it eliminates the blocks that cause tightening of the muscle.
- This massage helps in increasing the circulation of blood, lymph cerebro-spinal and interstitial fluids
- This slow, but strong massage is especially helpful for athletes, who require extensive muscle conditioning.
- It not only loosens the muscles, but also helps in relieving the pain.
- Deep tissue massage helps in stimulating, conditioning and healing of muscle tissues.
- It is really useful in chronic pain, fibromyalgia, edema, muscle cramping, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.
- It helps muscle tissue stimulation in tense areas, which arise due to exerted pressure.
- You might be surprised to know that deep tissue massage helps in improving the functioning of the internal organs and any symptoms or diseases associated with them.
- Since the massage therapy gives a body rejuvenated feel and freedom from toxins and clogs, the posture and mobility of a person undergoing the massage also improves.
Who Cannot Undergo Deep Tissue Massage
- People who have undergone a surgery in the recent past should avoid deep tissue massage.
- Those with cardiovascular conditions and heart disease, especially in cases of thrombosis, phlebitis and edema cannot undergo this massage therapy.
- Pregnant women and people with osteoporosis should also avoid the massage, unless advised by the doctor.
- Deep tissue massage is not permissible immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless it is recommended by the doctor.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
BRIGHTENING THERAPY WITH TRUETONE
The latest addition to the PCA SKIN pigment control regimen is brightening therapy with TrueTone. This original formulation utilizes a blend of
-
Phenylethyl resorcinol, which inhibits the conversion of tyrosinase to L-DOPA and acts as a potent antioxidant decreasing inflammation.
-
Undecylenoyl phyenylalanine which combines undeylenic acid with an amino acid, forming a revolutionary, non-irritating ingredient capable of inhibiting melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH). Inhibition of this hormone stops the first step of pigment production, thus preventing the formation and distribution of melanosomes.
- Arbutin, which is a hydroquinone derivative and allows for controlled release of the effective lightener, without irritation.
This breakthrough formulation is the perfect addition to any pigment control regimen, as it provides even, glowing skin to every patient affected by skin discoloration.
