Calling Sylvia in New York
 with Mr.Shrewbury of Payless clothing

Greetings!

MyShrewbury
Sept: 7th    Weather: Sunny

Next to Everybody's coffee is "Payless Clothing" owned by Mr.Shrewbury, 75 year old man from Brooklyn. After dozing off at Everybody's coffee, I usually stop by Payless Clothing and have a small talk with Mr.Shrewbury. He always feeds me and makes sure I am stuffed and healthy.

Today I needed to ask him a favor to make a long distance call to Sylvia in New York. If I asked the Malchoviches, they would be too curious to let me leave without asking any questions. Mr.Shrewbury always makes me laugh with funny jokes about people, but he is never nosy about others' privacies.

When I went to his shop, he was eating tuna sandwich. He put me up on the chair next to him and split his sandwich in half for me.
"I had a customer who shoplifted $3 earrings today. It's sad she committed a crime for $3.I wonder how she would feel when she puts on those earrings."
Mr.Shrewbury shook his head.
He has lots of colorful clothes and accessories for young ladies.Lisa always shops here.
"In the store Mr.Shrewbury is always either sleeping over the counter or eating a sandwich."
Lisa once told me, so I am sure Mr.Shrewbury was sleeping when the girl took $3 earrings. But since Mr.Shrewbury remembers what he has in his shop, where he has and how many he has, he must have found a pair of earrings missing later.

"Why are you open on Labor day? You should be resting at home." I said.
"I rest here." said Mr.Shrewrbury.
calling sylvia

Sylvia picked up the phone after a couple of rings.
It was so nice to hear her voice. I realized how much I missed her.
"I miss you, too. You should have visited me with Don." said Sylvia.
This reminded me of the reason I called her. Although I was very happy to talk with her, I had to keep in mind how cruel Sylvia was to Don's script and stand by Don's side.
I decided to sound strict on Sylvia.
"Sylvia. You hurt Don's feeling. You should see all the books Don has about the universe and the planets."
Sylvia seemed not to understand what I was getting at for a while, but began to catch up with her memory.
"Is this about Don's script? I can tell he is still upset about me. Don got very offended that night and yelled at me to stop asking the questions. But I just wanted to understand what was going on in his scrip because I did care about his script."
I heard Sylvia sigh on the end of the line.
"You shouldn't have laughed at the killer Global Warming."
"I tried to be as helpful and honest as I could be. I wish he were a little more willing to the suggestions. It is always good to share works and discuss. He doesn't lose anything by listening to the suggestions. He still has a choice to take it or leave it."
"Suggestions like replacing the killer Global warming with GOZIRA? You made fun of his script."
I decided still not to go easy on her.
"I never said that. I said the killer Global Warming wasn't clear enough to make me understand the plot. It was very confusing to me. If it's a monster, it should be visible like GOZIRA. If not, he should stick to just Global Warming. He doesn't need to create a monster out of it. That's what I said.I never said he should change it to GOZIRA."
What I just heard from Sylvia was quite different from what Don told me the other day, so I decided to stay quiet and just listen to her for a while.
"To be honest, I don't often watch the movies showing people getting shot or exploded.I am a huge fan of Independent films.I'd rather go to Sundance film festival than watching Academy. What both Don and I appreciate seemed very different. But I do respect his work. That's why I wanted my opinions to be honest and sincere."
Now I got confused by listening to those technical words I'd never heard of such as independent films or Sundance film Festival. Besides that, what Sylvia was saying also made a sense to me.But I still tried to stick to Don's side, feeling unsure about my standing now.
"But you laughed at his idea, didn't you?"
Sylvia sighed again and then said, "Don is a funny guy. He always makes me laugh, so whatever he does, sometimes I can't tell if he is joking or he is serious. I don't know how far I should take him seriously."
Her misunderstanding against Don was something unforgivable to me.This was the very moment I had to stand up for Don.
"Sylvia, Don is giving his life to his script. Hollywood has been his dream since he was three years old. He has been working hard on it."
After a short silence, I heard her gentle voice back on the end of the line.
"I will call Don and talk to him tonight. But I always want to be honest with him because I want him to make it in movies. First of all, I will tell him he needs to shorten his scrip.OK? and I promise I will read his script."
I knew I wasn't wrong about calling Sylvia. I knew there must have been some misunderstanding between them.
"Thank you, Sylvia."
"Actually I should thank him, too. I learned a lot about Hollywood from Don. Life is all about learning, isn't it?"

After talking about Don, she told me she would be back in our neighborhood in Nov to cerebrate Thanksgiving with us. I got so excited I could see Sylvia in two more months. A week ago I was upset about Sylvia with Don, but now I was glad to find she was a kind of person just like I expected after all.

On the way from school in the late afternoon, Lisa stopped by Payless clothing. Mr. Shrewbury, Lisa and I played the cards for a while and then Lisa took her science book out of her backpack, and began working on her homework on the counter. Meanwhile I helped Mr.Shrewbury folding the clothes in the store. Later Mr.Shrewbury ordered pizza for us and we all ate pizza together, laughing with Mr.Shrewbury's silly jokes as usual. At 6; 00 we helped him close the store.

                           calling sylvia with Lisa
Walking back to our apartment with me, Lisa said, "Mr.Shrewbury had heart attack last year. He fully recovered now. But it must be scary to go home where no one waits for him, especially after the heart attack."

That evening, Don came over and proudly told me he decided to forgive Sylvia because she called and apologized her rudeness to him.
"It comes to think of it, Sylvia has a keen insight and a good eye for the details. She told me to make the plot more simple and shorten another 150 pages.I've' got to get myself busy working on that."
Watching Don hopping up the stairs, I knew I had saved the Princess SunShine from being deleted from his script.
