Greetings! |
This issue is ALL about celebration!
This month, VIBRANCE turns five years old!
You are encouraged to celebrate with us by jumping up and down on the bed, doing the coconut dance, or taking the day off work (really - we okay'ed it with your boss!) Here at VIBRANCE headquarters, we are celebrating by giving away goodies! Lots and lots of goodies!
Below you can find out how you can get in on the goods. (there's not one, but TWO ways!) Best of luck to you, and Happy Summer!
Warmly Yours,

Celebrating Summer - Without Gaining Weight
|
There's always a big push to lose weight for the summer, then we engage in all sorts of activities which encourage weight to come back on -- heavy BBQ's, travel to new and exciting places, summer parties and celebrations all centered around lots and lots of food. The unscheduled nature of summer interferes with routines which keep weight more easily managed and often people notice a couple of extra pounds in preparation for the winter months. Given that we don't opt to hibernate, this extra weight isn't necessary! Here are some of my top tips to avoid gaining weight when traveling and enjoying summer festivities: Click here for more: |

Staying Balanced - the Art of Radical Self-Care
|
I recently asked 297 of my closest friends and colleagues (okay - it was via Facebook) how they take care of stress. Geniuses that they are, they come up with some incredible ideas to combat the stress of daily life --- some of these I will definitely add to my repertoire!
- Saleem A. suggests, "Going for a walk in the neighborhood and take in all the stuff I don't
see when I'm driving by. I literally tell myself look at that car, that
window, that telephone pole, that dog running after me, the street
sign, the view of the sky through the trees or over someone's
fence...literally all the things that are around me I try to identify
them. While taking deep breaths too. It's what gets me present to now,
and lowers my stress dramatically." Definitely! As soon as we can get present and out of our minds, life seems a little less intense. I love the idea of bringing focus to the world around you!
- Colleague Aqiylah Collins gardens. She elaborates:"Being outside in the fresh air, digging in the earth, communing with the miracle of nature." Sounds heavenly!
- Take a nap.
- Share troubles with others.
- Client Kate E. suggests: "I go to the nearby playground and swing on the swingset like I did when I was 10. Works every time!" I have to admit - this was my favorite idea!
- Go for a run!
- HR 175 on elliptical/treadmill hills for 53 minutes.Or, of course, white powdered donuts. (Way to keep it real, Maggie D!)
- Visit a greenhouse or park, get down to a body of water and stare at the waves.
- Listen to your favorite music!
- Deep breathing (a popular choice!)
We can't always pack up and head out of town, so it's important to have a good set of resources to manage day-to-day stress so we enjoy our lives to the fullest. Your suggestions are welcomed! Email me with some of your favorite ways to unwind!

RECIPE: Grilled Shrimp and Black Beans
|
This protein packed entree is light and filling. Marinated tofu can easily be substituted for the shrimp for a vegetarian version - simply brush with oil before placing upon a clean grill and heat until warmed. Serve with jicama slaw (below) and young spinach leaves.
Grilled Shrimp with Black Beans (courtesy of Good Housekeeping)

1 lime
2 cans (15 to 19 ounces each) black beans, rinsed and drained
2 ripe plum tomatoes, chopped
2 green onions, thinly sliced
1 small yellow pepper, seeded and chopped
1 jalapeņo chile, seeded and finely chopped
1/2 cup (loosely packed) fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 pound large shrimp, shelled and deveined
Lime wedges
Prepare charcoal fire or preheat gas grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat.
Meanwhile,
from lime, grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 2 tablespoons juice. In
large bowl, stir lime juice and 1/4 teaspoon lime peel with beans,
tomatoes, green onions, pepper, jalapeņo, cilantro, oil, and 1/2
teaspoon salt. Set aside at room temperature. Makes about 5 cups.
In
medium bowl, toss shrimp with remaining 1/4 teaspoon lime peel and 1/4
teaspoon salt. Place shrimp on hot grill rack (or hot flat grill
topper) and cook 3 to 4 minutes or just until shrimp turn opaque
throughout, turning shrimp over once.
Stir about half of shrimp into bean salad; top with remaining shrimp. Serve with lime wedges.
Jicama Slaw (adapted from Boy Meets Grill)
1 large jicama, peeled and finely shredded
1/2 Napa cabbage, finely shredded
2 carrots, shredded
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons ancho chili powder
2 tablespoons agave nectar
1/4 cup flax, pumpkin seed, or olive oil
Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro leaves
Place jicama, cabbage, and carrots in a large bowl. Whisk together the
lime juice, vinegar, ancho powder, honey, and oil in a medium bowl.
Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour the dressing over the
jicama mixture and toss to coat well. Fold in the cilantro. Let stand
at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.
