This Issue: FUNNY BEAR STORIES !

I am sitting on a plane to Reno for SCI with one of our ace guides, Dave Lower, and he is recounting some of the funniest things he has seen while guiding for us.  Here’s a sample-
Dave once had a bow hunter sitting on a stand hunting black bear. He had a big black bear on the bait, but this was one smart bear. The problem was the bear was onto the hunter and stayed behind the barrel the whole time. He had the barrel lined up perfectly, blocking the hunter’s shooting lane., This bear wasn’t going to give up on that tasty popcorn we use for bait. The bear purposely stayed  behind the barrel, only reaching around every few minutes to scoop the pile of popcorn with its paw and pulling it behind the barrel so he could eat it. This continued for four straight days and did not last for minutes, but for hours at a time. Eventually the bear did slip up and the hunter was successful.  To make matters even worse, the bear ran into the lake  and died. Getting a wet 500 lb. bear into a boat is no easy chore. The hunter, who shall remain nameless, was so ecstatic he got inebriated that night and promptly went outside the tent and relieved himself on poor Dave’s chain saw. Talk about no respect !
Another dilemma was Dave and another hunter looking for a huge colored bear they had seen the day before. On the second day,   they returned and the bear was nowhere to be found ….. until they looked ….UP !  There was the huge colored bear, sitting in the tree stand , looking down at them with its paws crossed. After much discussion and the bear refusing to budge, the hunter had no choice but to shoot him up in the stand. The dilemma then was to get the bear out of the tree stand. Up the hunter went, finally , rolling the bear down to below to a waiting Dave who was videotaping the whole thing.
There’s never a dull moment with CSAH. This spring, Dave sat in camp waiting for his hunters to arrive. Suddenly he heard a noise. Looking over, he saw his boat rocking . back and forth. A big black had set up camp in his boat, feasting on the bag of popcorn sitting there. How’d he get him out ? That’s another story…….

We’ll have more Dave stories later…………

SCI RENO BEGINS...

The Greatest Show on Earth ! You may have heard that phrase before but it aptly describes the Safari Club International Show beginning today in Reno, NV. This sportshow/convention is a step above all others, featuring outfitters from all corners of the globe and a mix of fine firearms, jewelry, furs, taxidermy, and art.  You never who you are going to  bump into when you walk the aisles, could be Craig Boddington, Chuck Yeager, Jim Shockey, or even the beautiful Bo Derek.  If you get a chance to visit, it’s a sportsman’s paradise, and we’ll be there,  in booths 137 and 139 with the Ganglers/Canadian Sub-Arctic hunting booths. If you get a chance, please stop by !

CAPT. DAVE AGAIN!

Here’s a couple of shots of one of Capt. Dave’s lucky spring hunters, Gary Winkler, with a 6’6” black bear that Dave estimated at over 400 lbs.

2011 Caribou Dates & Openings

We are shifting some of our dates slightly back in September. Please check our website for more details. For those interested, we still have assorted mixed openings available. We’re definitely pumped up and ready to go for 2011 !

2011 Caribou Now 7 Days

At CSAH, we are constantly tweaking things, always looking to give you the best hunt possible. In regards to caribou, it’s true a strong migration can mean all you need are two days to take two great animals. However, I don’t believe an outfitter should plan his trips based on the best case scenario but the more challenging. By adding an extra day,  it gives us more time, crucial time, in case we must shift hunters to other areas to catch the migration (please remember we do that at no extra charge).  It also allows bow hunters more time to be ‘picky’ when selecting their animal.  You are coming a long way and purchasing a quality hunt and we want it to be a memorable one !

The Manitoba Central-Barrenground caribou hunt now ranks #1 in the top quality caribou hunts in North America and CSAH is the finest in Manitoba !
