This Issue: Trip for the Ages

There are  good hunts, then there are great hunts and then there are hunts which define GREAT !   This spring,  Gary Blough  Sr. and his family definitely enjoyed a heart-pounding hunting adventure they will never forget.

They chose Gangler’s Canadian Sub-Arctic Hunting this spring for a classic trophy black bear experience,  looking forward to tangling with some high-quality bear hunting  combined with excellent fishing.  Even better, this was going to serve as a great family get together. They got all that and more !

On arrival, camp guides Marshall and John  greeted them with exciting news.  Most of the baits were being pounded, including one with a bear which was absolutely monstrous.  John and Marshall between them have over 80 years of experience in the bush and this was the biggest bear they had ever seen.  Both estimated this bear with a rug at 8’ or better. When they first saw it through binocs, they were shocked to realize that what they were first viewing wasn’t  the whole animal, just the head !  That head took up the entire 45 gallon barrel as they observed it. The Bloughs couldn’t wait !

Big bears  began to drop on the second day. Chris Blough, Gary Sr.’s son,  sat on alert with his bow as a beautiful specimen came in to his bait.  He drew and soon had a beauty, with a Manitoba Monster measuring 6’8” and a skull at 20 8/16”.  The next day featured grandfather and grandson together, as Gary shared a stand with grandson  Christy,  who quickly converted a nice blackie with his .270. While waiting on this bear, the guides had spotted another huge bear on the south river bait. As soon as they were done with  Christy’s bear, Gary went and sat on that stand.   Within hours, he scored another magnificent trophy, a monster just under 7’ with a 20 10/16” skull.

This left son Gary Jr. A seasoned bow hunter, he continued to religiously hunt the bait the 8 footer had been spotted at, day after day. In the meantime, another large bear had moved in too .  Gary Jr. watched this bear for 3 days, filming it several times. Finally on the 6th day, it became apparent the 8’ had moved on and he decided to take the second monster with his bow. What a trophy !  This bruiser measured at almost 7’2” with a skull  around 21”- B and C,  estimated weight was over 450 lbs.  The largest bear of the week, a phenomenal bear, and not even the one he was hunting !

To make a great hunt even better they enjoyed the CSAH bonus over other black bear hunts,  our awesome fishing. They enjoyed total North Seal variety and action, first getting into a trout hole where day after day, 8-10 pounders were the norm. The pike and walleye action was tremendous, with trophy size and hundreds caught. Guide John said there were two instances where all six anglers had fish on at the same time.  To top it off, they enjoyed some phenomenal arctic grayling fishing at the south river on the last day. The smiles on their faces when they returned said it all.  A hunt – an EXPERIENCE-  of a lifetime for the Blough family. Check out the pics !

The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of a great price is forgotten. It’s not just about $$$, your time is valuable and you can’t afford
to waste it.
