Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Presenting history, drama, music and fun, the award winning performance troupe Classical Kids LIVE! will join the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra for an extraordinary event held on Wednesday, October 10th in the La Porte Civic Auditorium at 9:30 am, 11:10 am and 12:45 pm. The public is invited to attend a performance at the low rate of $1 per ticket. Click here to purchase tickets online or pay with cash or check at the door. Parking is in the Tecumseh Street lot and school buses and children will have the preferred reserved seating; however, there are plenty of seats available for visitors at each of the performances. For Maestro Philip Bauman this has been a production that was years in the making. Paul Pement, the director and producer of this production has wanted to bring his acting troup to the La Porte stage due to the long standing tradition of quality experiences for school children that has been in place in this community. Classical Kids LIVE! is produced by Classical Kids Music Education, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to furthering classical music education. In combination with the Classical Kids Teaching Edition, Classical Kids LIVE! serves as one of the world's best educational outreach and community engagement programs contributing to the long-term health of classical music. Having received more awards and honors than any other entity of its kind, Classical Kids is proud to say, "We're making a difference!" It is due to the caliber of this group combined with the quality of the La Porte County Symphony orchestra that funding was secured for this special performance event through ART WORKS, a National Endowment for the Arts grant. About the show The world famous production of Beethoven Lives Upstairs was created by Susan Hammond based upon an original work by Barbara Nichol. It features a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle. Their subject is the "madman" who has moved into the upstairs apartment of Christoph's Vienna home. Through a touching correspondence dramatically underscored with the composer's most beautiful excerpts, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the beauty of his music, and the torment of his deafness. Audiences will be captivated by more than twenty-five excerpts of the master's music, including the Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, and the great Fifth and Ninth Symphonies. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors share their anecdotes and observations based on true incidents from the composer's life. The performance is approximately 50 minutes in length and is recommended for audiences age six and up. A Word of Thanks Gratitude goes to the Shirley Lubeznik Family. With their dedication to area youth, they have sponsored either family or children's orchestra events for six years. Additional support for this educational event comes from area businesses and individuals - some of which have provided funding for over 27 years including: The La Porte Savings Bank, V. Michael and Cherri Drayton, David and Dr. Linda Sirugo Family, General Insurance Services, Rackham Service Corporation and Kankakee Valley REMC Operation Round Up. Led by event Chairperson V. Michael Drayton and Reservation Coordinator Pamela Bush there is a volunteer task force that makes this event possible. Organizations that work with the LCSO are La Porte Service League, Kesling Student Council and the La Porte Civic Staff, who assist in ushering the students and parking the buses surrounding the civic to ensure that close to 5000 school children from a 7 county area safely find their seats.
