Symphonic Surprises a Success Dynamic Contrasts season to begin
|
Greetings!
I hope you were able to enjoy all of the Symphonic Surprises during the 2009-2010 La Porte County Symphony Orchestra season. It was a season of emotions combined with great symphonic music mingled with joy and a few heartfelt tears. From the magic of great ballet performers, the premiere of an orchestrated ballad to honor musicians and others with cancer survivor stories, to the surprising entertainment of a real live cowboy and his talents with a bull whip, this orchestra provided uplifting experiences along with superb symphonic work.
Mark your calendar to attend the orchestra events this Summer and for the upcoming season. The season theme of Dynamic Contrasts will be suited for all ages to enjoy with a variety of music at each event to highlight our gifted orchestra and showcase a variety of talents. In November the Three Other Tenors will bring light comedy and a range of singing from Broadway to opera and the La Porte High School Orchestra will perform in a side-by-side. In March a gifted pianist Thomas Pandofl will be featured. At the April Pops concert the Notre Dame Glee Club, South Shore Dance Alliance and LCSO Children's Chorus will provide youthful, enthusiastic entertainment.
The programs at La Porte Symphony concert events are carefully chosen to inspire, entertain, and engage the audience. Along with the season concerts we are also bringing to La Porte once again HoosierSTAR and The
Nutcracker Ballet for the enjoyment of everyone. The musicians work very hard and have succeeded in improving and growing in their artistry. They enjoy sharing their talents with you, your friends, your family and your neighbors. Fill up the auditorium to demonstrate your appreciation for the symphony's work and dedication to bringing quality musical experiences to this community. Consider this your personal invitation.
Respectfully Yours, Lee Bauman, Executive Director La Porte County Symphony Orchestra 219.362.9020 Click on the highlighted names for links to websites to learn

PIE CONTEST RESULTS!!! There was a tie in the PIE
CONTEST! Both contestants scored 94 out of 100.
Bragging rights go to: Cindy Ault - 4th of July Pie & Betty Carpenter - Apple Walnut Streusel Pie They were two very different types of pies that were prime culinary examples of the Summer and Fall harvests.
Cindy's apple, blueberry & strawberry fruit pie had a light, evenly textured crust that resulted in a delightful crunchy cookie flavor. Delicate morsels of the outer covering melted tenderly with each bite. The interesting fruity blend had surprising bursts of flavors in a complimentary flavored sauce.
Betty's pies looked
like they belonged on the cover of "Bon Appetit". The golden colored cut out decorations complemented the buttery melt-in-your-mouth taste. Every bite of the apple included a light crunch of walnut that captured a feeling of Autumn harvest.

Magic Baton 2010
The April Pops tradition of the Magic Baton auction took on a whole new life
this year. People from all over the United States were involved.
Four
worthy contestants were nominated: Cindy Ault, Jonathan Johnson, Matt Nelson and
Andrew Steck.
The nominees that sparked the most action were Cindy Ault and Jonathan Johnson. Cindy, the Principal Bassoonist for LCSO had a previous family member, her daughter Janet conduct at the "Music Man" pops concert in 2006. Jonathan, one of the LCSO's concertmasters in the orchestra this season and a student at Valparaiso University has conducting experience and was eager to show the audience his abilities. The race between Cindy and Jonathan was very close in the pre-concert voting that took place online and by mail. As a matter of fact, there was less than a $20 difference between these leaders when the doors opened for the April Pops concert.
Before the concert and at intermission, Cindy enthusiastically encouraged everyone she knew to vote for her. She really knows a lot of people! Jonathan played a variety of strains on his violin for voting attention, and drew some more dollars for the symphony. Andrew Steck was gussied up in cowboy attire for the occasion. Matt Nelson was very busy with LCSO Children's Chorus preparations. Matt was an outstanding choirmaster for those elementary students this year! The Baton Contest truly took on old fashion politics as the voting boxes were stuffed by hundreds of audience members.
Magic Baton 2010 Winner | It took a bit of time for the staff to count the votes. After the orchestra performed a wonderful tribute to a special pig named Babe, the winner was announced. It was the high school student Andrew Steck that came from the
back of the heat to collect 949 votes/dollars for the orchestra. Andrew did an admirable job and is added to the list of great
conductors of the Magic Baton.
Altogether over $2000 was raised this year. For everyone that was part of this we give you a hearty thanks. The funds from this event go toward programs that instill the love of symphonic music to youth and children. |
