It is time to get your table reservation for the April Pops Concert!  The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra season of Symphonic Surprises will finish with dazzling and award winning entertainment for the whole family.  Beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, the La Porte Civic Auditorium will be transformed into the theme of State Fair: A Blue Ribbon Event.  The musical selections, the sights, extra performers and perhaps some "smells" will remind the audience of a great State Fair evening.  The Robert J. Hiler Family is one of the concert sponsors, a long-standing tradition for the April Pops.  In addition this year, Dr. & Mrs. Charles F. Hagenow have chosen to be designated as concert supporters of this event, showing their support of the orchestra's work with the community.

For many weeks, Matt Nelson has been rehearsing an eager group of elementary students who make up the LCSO Children's Chorus. This group has a desire to sing, is enthusiastic about learning, and is ready to entertain the Pops audience for this spring concert.  Funded by a La Porte County Unity Foundation grant, a variety of 2nd-5th Graders previously had the opportunity to join the orchestra at a concert in November.

Kyrie AndersonKatie Reeves
Award winning starlets will perform when Kyrie Anderson and Katie Reeves take the stage.  These singers were the Hoosier Star 2009 vocal competition winners.  It will be a fantastic chance for the audience to have the benefit of enjoying the excellent performances of these first rate winners.

There also will be three featured guests to show off their particular talents accompanied by the full symphony.  The first guest will be Hans Martin Werner, a professional artistic whistler.  While Mr. Werner is a classically trained whistler, he is looking forward to the relaxed variety of music that is programmed in a Pops concert.

The secondThomas Misch guest is Thomas Misch, making a return performance with the orchestra.  Known as "The Juggling Fanatic," Thomas made a lasting impression upon the symphony crowd a few years ago at a January concert.  He is very gifted at juggling and will demonstrate an enormous assortment of objects that he can suspend in the air while in motion as the orchestra accompanies him.

This Pops Concert marks the final concert of the 2009-2010 season.  As the theme of the year suggests, there will be one more featured Symphonic Surprise that the orchestra will not fully disclose before the concert begins.  The only part of this secret to be given is that there will be a third featured guest.  Only the audience attending the concert will be able to be completely flabbergasted by an astonishing display of entertainment of unimaginable proportions, the likes of which could only be at "a larger than life" State Fair: Blue Ribbon Event.

Purchase tickets at www.LCSO.net, 219-362-9020, or mail a check to LCSO, P.O. Box 563, La Porte, IN 46352
Balcony Tickets available at the La Porte Civic Auditorium during business hours

La Porte County Symphony Orchestra's MAGIC BATON

La Porte County Symphony's Magic Baton Auction provides funds that go toward symphony projects that foster musical growth in the young people.  These programs include the LCSO Children's Chorus, the Young Artist Competition and outreach to schools.

This year the Magic Baton will be held in a new way, in order to involve more people and to save time for the concert itself:

1. Until April 1st, an individual interested in conducting the orchestra may "throw his/her hat into the ring" with a $25 donation to the orchestra.  Send your nomination to MagicBaton@LCSO.net or call 219 362-9020.

2. Nominees will be posted online at www.LCSO.net and any individual can vote for them by pledging a donation to the orchestra.  Send your pledge amount & vote to MagicBaton@LCSO.net.  Each vote costs one dollar.  Donations of all sizes are encouraged. Voting for people even a hundred times is completely appropriate.

3. At the concert, photos of the nominees with donation boxes will be prominently displayed so that more voting/donations can be made.

4. The winner will be the one who has raised the most money for the orchestra by the end of intermission at the Pops Concert.  That person will perform with the symphony that evening, April 17.

HISTORICALLY

The Magic Baton has a rich history with the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra.  The idea began in 1981 at the symphony's second annual pops concert, titled "To La Porte With Love."  The concert opened with a rousing "Stars and Stripes Forever," conducted by Mayor A. J. Rumely. It was part of the city of La Porte's 150th birthday celebration.

The following year the "Magic Baton" was born.  The conductor's baton, previously mastered by Mayor Rumely, was transformed into a "Magic Baton."   It has become an integral and indispensable feature of the La Porte County Symphony's Pops Concert.  An auction is held to determine the winner of the baton.  The magic instantly transforms the highest bidder into an experienced symphony conductor.

After the bidding concludes, the winner steps to the conductor's podium to lead the orchestra in John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."  In addition to their moment as Maestro, winners are presented with an engraved plaque and a photograph of their experience.
