November Highlights
The La Porte County Symphony's season of Symphonic Surprises made a great impact on thousands of children and hundreds of first-time concert goers in October and November.
At the November concert, Benjamin Britten's "Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra", a classic lesson about the orchestra narrated by Grant Fitch, opened the program. Emotional performances from mezzo soprano Sandra Maytan mesmerized the crowd. The surprise of the evening was an excerpt from "The Nutcracker." A two-minute Russian style dance called the "Trepak" included dramatic flips, leaps and zestful dancing demonstrated by the ballet performers. It was a fun way to advertise the talents of the dancers who would perform in La Porte on December 5 for a matinee ballet.
In the second half of the concert, the LCSO Children's Chorus shared their love of singing in a piece that also included
artist Laura Krentz, actor Grant Fitch, singer Sandra Maytan,
concertmistress Diane Economakis, and ballerina Sarah Holland. The community chorus of 2nd- 5th graders was directed by Matt Nelson and sponsored by the Unity Foundation of La Porte County and Dr. Gene and Romona Hay.
Mr. Nelson and the chorus are looking for more children to join them to sing with the orchestra at the April Pops concert, "State Fair: A Blue Ribbon Event."

Thanks to the many individuals and corporations that have generously given financial gifts to the orchestra this season!
Thanks to the many people who attend our events!
In recent years the income for the orchestra has decreased. Because of the economy it is no surprise that many corporations and individuals have chosen to give less. Available state grant money has been cut twice now. To compensate for this, the January concert that brought a variety of cultural experiences to Michigan City was taken off the season planning. The previous year the February chamber concert was removed from the calendar. Your support is greatly appreciated in order to carry on with the concerts that are scheduled annually and to keep our orchestra together.
Show your support of this passionate group of musicians by considering a donation now, before the end of the year. Mail a check to LCSO, P.O. Box 563, La Porte IN 46352 or donate by credit card by following the linked Donate button below.
Thank you for this consideration.

"The Nutcracker" Indiana Ballet Theatre combined with LCSO to bring this timeless holiday classic to the La Porte Civic Auditorium. The LCSO accompanied the ballet's evening performances at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville on December 2 & 3. Then December 5 an encore presentation in La Porte finished the ballet troupe's holiday season. The sets were stunning, the costumes were classic and the music was incredible. It was a spectacular matinee performance with over 250 Girl Scouts and many Senior groups in attendance to witness the dancers glide and twirl to portray an imaginative story.
It was a leap of faith that the orchestra decided to
bring "The Nutcracker" ballet to La Porte. The attendance at that first
time event was astonishing. Thank you for trusting the La Porte County Symphony to bring first-class entertainment to our community.

 Holiday at the Pops
For the 15th year the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra was hired by the La Porte Hospital Foundation to raise money for the La Porte Hospital VNA Hospice and Home care programs. The hospital foundation is grateful for the community support to their successful fund raising event.
There are many "doctors in the house," and occasionally some of them perform music too. This year Dr. William Wolf performed a saxophone solo. Laura Darby-Crosslin, Lauren Mazur, and Jerry Sorenson were featured vocal soloists.
The program was created by Maestro Philip Bauman to showcase the orchestra in a variety of ways. From the classic melodies in a piece from Handel's "Messiah" to rocking with a Trans Siberian Orchestra arrangement, there was music for everyone's taste. Also showcased for this event was the Emerson Concert Choir from Gary and the Trinity Children's chorus from Michigan City.
The evening once again closed with the sing-a-long "Silent Night" and peaceful holiday wishes to all.
