Question of the Week! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This section is dedicated to you, our readers! Feel free to reply to this email with any of your fun stories from your vacation in Pigeon Forge. Send us photos, memories, travel tips, anything that you would like to tell us about your experience in the Smokies. Every week we will highlight reader's comments in this article. Thanks for all the feedback. We love to hear from you!
This week's question, "With the fall season right around the corner where is your favorite place to view the fall foliages in the Smokies?"
Last week's question, "Cades Cove is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Smokies. How do you like to visit Cades Cove? Biking, hiking, running, riding in the car, etc. tell us your Cades Cove story!"
Carolyn writes, "We enjoy driving through Cades Cove in our vehicle each time we visit the Smokies. We take our time so that we can see the deer, horses, turkeys, birds, and bears. We like to stop and walk around the shop and also some of the old homesteads. We stop at the picnic area on our way out and have a picnic at a table by the mountain stream. After that we spread out a blanket on which my Hubby usually takes a nap while I read a good book. We drive back to Gatlinburg "the long way around" by going through Townsend, Wears Valley, and Pigeon Forge. Our favorite time to drive through Cades Cove is in November when it is cool and the leaves are still wearing their beautiful colors."
Helen says, "Our family loves Cades Cove, we usually visit the Cove twice a year. We drive through the Cove in our car. We started visiting the Cove when are kids were little, now we take the Grandkids. The kids really love the Cove , they stay busy looking for wild life, deer wild Turkeys and the best of all the Black Bear, last September they saw twelve bear, they were so excited. We also like to visit the old cabins and churches in the cove it is like going back in time. There is no better way than to spend the day in the cove. We will be returning next year for another great adventure."
Melody writes, "I visit Cades Cove on every visit to the Smoky mountains. I love traveling the loop in my pick-up with my female Yorkie, Cara. I especially love spending Thanksgiving there. I pack a picnic basket with turkey sub sandwiches, pumpkin or pecan pie, and a big thermos of coffee. Cara and I ate our meal out of a wagon in a barn at Cades Cove last year. It was the best Thanksgiving I ever had. This will be my yearly ritual from now on. Just 2 girls enjoying the beauty of the mountains."
Deborah says, "What memories I have of Cades Cove Cades Cove was one of my fathers favorite places to come in the smokies. Whenever we came up to the smokies we would ride thru Cades Cove at least three or four times on our visit to the smokies once in the morning to see the wild life and again in the afternoon just to ride thru and stop at several cabins, just walk around and dream about the life the settlers had and their way of life then we would stop at one of the pull outs and admire the view of the mountains and pastures sometime we got to see a deer or two running around , usually have a tailgate lunch, just enjoy the peace and quite and RELAX. My favorite time was in the fall of the year in hopes of seeing a bear or other wild life.. on a couple trips in the winter we have been cought in cades cove during a snow storm. Cades Cove is a beautiful place but during a snow storm it`s beauty is magnified with all the white powder on the ground, that is when Cades Cove is at it`s best with a blanket of snow on the ground it just brings out the tranquil beauty of mother nature."

Be Bear Aware
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you've been in the Park recently, you may have noticed more bears than usual. According to Smokies Wildlife Biologist Bill Stiver the reasons for recent increases in bear/people encounters and bear activity in general are basically 2 fold-This summer's berry crop has been poor and two seasons ago we had a fall mast crop failure, which meant that few females gave birth to cubs the following season. Last year the fall mast crop was good. Therefore, this season a very high percentage of females have cubs, which only add to the stress of the food situation.
Let's all remember to be responsible users of our national park, and help protect park bears. Always remember- A fed bear is a dead bear. Let's make sure we don't contribute to bears becoming habituated to humans or our food and garbage. Read more about how you can protect our bears and be safe in our parks!
