This week's question, "Have you been to any of the new restaurants in the area? Tell us about it!"
Last week's question, "Have you ever been rafting in the Smokies? Tell us your story!"
Denise writes, "Yes! I rafted for the first time last year with Outdoor Adventures. We had so much fun! I went with a large group of family members of all ages and we had a blast. The staff at Outdoor Adventures was great and we had fun family rivalry between our two boats. I'm looking forward to rafting again at this year's family reunion!" |

Synchronous Fireflies in Elkmont
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Every year during the firefly mating season the fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park begin to flash in unison. This phenomenon involves all the male individuals of one species. They are the only species in America whose individuals can synchronize their flashing light patterns. This year the peak mating season is June 4 - 12. You can view the fireflies by taking the trolley from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Elkmont nightly beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the cost is $1. It is recommended that visitors bring flashlights with red cellophane covers to reduce white light. Visitors can bring lawn chairs, and carry food and water in backpacks which can fit on their laps in the trolleys. Since the firefly viewing has become so popular the trolley is the only way to get to the viewing spot and there are no other vehicles allowed in the Elkmont area after 5:00 p.m. during these dates.
