Harlow Gardens Newsletter
July 2009 Issue 47 |
Greetings!
Many of our readers and customers are very familiar with our remarkable Garden Center and Gift Shop. This month we want to spotlight our four award-winning landscape designers, including co-owner and president of Harlow Gardens John M. Harlow, Jr. Click HERE to read what some of our satisfied customers have to say and please read on for more about our services and design team. |
John M. Harlow, Jr. John has over 50 years of experience in the green industry. He has worked at Harlow's since 1956 when his parents, John M. Harlow, Sr. and Mary Louise, were operating Harlow Gardens. They started the business in 1939 after relocating to Tucson from Duluth, Minnesota. Today, John and twin brother Bill are co-owners of Harlow Gardens with John heading the Landscape Department. A multiple award-winning landscape designer, John especially enjoys the opportunity to work with people who want to remodel an existing landscape--a specialty many landscape designers avoid. Jeff Henneke A former "Hoosier," Jeff came to Tucson from Indiana in 1974. His first job was in a plant nursery, and in 1978, he and his brother started their own landscaping business. It was during this time that Jeff developed an interest and skill in landscape design. After selling their business in 1988, Jeff joined Harlow's the following year and has been the senior landscape designer since 1994. He and his wife Anneli have one daughter who recently graduated from the University of Arizona. Outside of Harlow's and spending time with family, Jeff enjoys soccer and volleyball refereeing, classical guitar, and collecting rock & roll posters and memorabilia. Read more

Clay Thompson Clay grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before moving to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona. Here he pursued his initial interest in horticulture and business and discovered his creative side could not be ignored leading him to the world of design. As early as the third grade, however, he remembers going on a field trip to a Zuni pueblo and admiring the unique black on black design of potter Maria Martinez who lived there at the time. As a landscape designer, the shapes, textures, and angular styles of Native American artwork, tapestries, and pottery influence many of his hardscape designs today. Clay and his wife Julie have one son and one daughter and enjoy collecting artwork for their home. When he's not busy sewing and cross-stitching or building frames for his tapestries, Clay enjoys cooking and is a gourmet chef (a welcome treat for the rest of us at Harlow's!). Read more

Kim Schwimmer Kim was born in Chicago and moved to Tucson with his family at a very young age. Although he resisted gardening at first, he learned to enjoy it and credits his father for this appreciation. He immediately took to the plants and landscape of the desert Southwest which eventually led to his career choice in landscape design and working at Harlow Gardens. Kim loves to read and listen to good music. And when not spending time with his own two dogs, he has volunteered many hours over the years caring for other animals. Read more
