As HARLOW GARDENS celebrates its 70th anniversary of doing business in Tucson this year, please join us as we periodically take a stroll down memory lane. We'll keep you posted with special events, sales, and historical trivia here and on our website as the year progresses. We invite you to share any memories you may have at contactus@harlowgardens.com. We are looking for the customer who has shopped with us the longest.

The month of February is shaping up to be an eventful one as we prepare for a series of free garden & culinary talks beginning February 21. See details below.

Carol Hegedus is also returning to conduct hands-on classes at Harlow's. Carol is a talented, well-versed tile artist with a finesse all her own, and we gladly welcome her back for a new session of mosaic tile classes this spring.

Congratulations to Dawn Q. Darkes. Dawn entered the drawing during our "We're Lonely" Sale last month and is the lucky winner of a $100 gift certificate. Thanks, Dawn, and to all our valued customers for participating!

Last but not least, we're excited to have participated in a recent local project with the folks at Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The full episode from Tucson airs March 22 on ABC.

Harlow Gardens since 1939
Milestones

John M. Harlow, Jr., and Bill Harlow are the current owners of Harlow Gardens. It was their parents, however, who established Harlow Gardens early on.

The short growing season in Duluth, Minnesota, limited their landscape business, so in
1937-38, John Sr. and wife Mary Louise traveled throughout the Southwest scouting winter business locations. Tucson won them over.

In 1940,
John Sr. ran a landscape contracting business located at 89 E. Alameda, and it didn't take long to discover that the growing season in Tucson was year round. It would be another seven years, however, before they would purchase property at the current location (way out of town!) on Pima Street for the purpose of growing plants.

THEN                                                                                    historic register now         ...and NOWthen and now register

When Harlow's originally opened to the public on Pima Street, the check out area was located inside the building that is now our beautiful Gift Shop, and hard goods items filled the surrounding space.

Sandra Montgomery, Artist

Sandra Montgomery windowSANDRA MONTGOMERY is a self-taught artist and Arizona native. She blends her love of painting and gardening when creating her Old Window Art. Susan believes windows are the eyes to the soul of every building and to recycle an old window into a new level of being is art in itself.

Although Susan's windows have been carefully collected from around the country, each finished piece is an original and sold only in Tucson. With the window as her canvas, Susan paints her favorite subjects including her own garden, the Arizona desert and surrounding mountains, Southwest missions, and barns of the Midwest and the South.
