Air Purifying Plants
rubber plant
Studies conducted by NASA with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) resulted in excellent news for homeowners and office workers. As it turns out, plants like the rubber plant (shown left) are not only attractive but very beneficial in purifying the air of toxins.

Newer buildings designed to conserve energy unfortunately also tend to trap pollutants from synthetic building materials inside. These trapped toxins result in what is commonly known as "sick building syndrome." NASA's study found that 19 common houseplants had the ability to remove hazardous gases from the air we breathe. The study targeted three very common harmful chemicals: formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. Top performers overall in filtering the air included philodendrons, spider plants, golden pothos, and dracaena 'Janet Craig.' Gerbera daisies and chrysanthemums (more often considered to be outdoor plants) also made the cut by being especially effective at removing benzene from the air, along with Dracaena massangeana (corn plants). Snake plants (Sansevieria), weeping figs (Ficus benjamina), English ivy (Hedera helix), and bamboo palms (Chamaedorea seifrizii) were all listed as being highly beneficial in filtering the air of toxins.

Studies also show that people heal quicker in environments with foliage. This is due not only because of the reasons mentioned above, but because of the psychological boost plants provide with their beauty and grace. You will find a stunning array of any of the plants mentioned here in our Gift Shop. So start by running a quick search here to learn more about these natural air filters. Then stop in and begin to improve your health and beautify your life indoors.

Horse Head Artwork - Cathy Eickhoff Negelspach
NegelspachCathy is one of the more recent local artists to join us at Harlow Gardens. Each piece of driftwood that Cathy finds along local river beds is sculpted and then fine-tuned to bring out the unique personality and magnificence of the horse she envisions. She credits Mother Nature for providing the basic element of her sculptures and is grateful to be able to blend her life long admiration of horses with her creativity and imagination. A stunning display of Cathy's pieces is located in our remarkable Garden Center.
