"Fairest of the months!
Ripe summer's queen
The hey-day of the year
With robes that gleam
With sunny sheen
Sweet August doth appear."

BEAUTIFUL BOUGAINVILLEAS |
|
Being very heat tolerant and providing nearly year-round color, bougainvilleas are popular plants in the Tucson garden. The colorful bracts (or leaves) are the star performers, as the actual flowers are tiny and hidden amongst the vivid foliage. Please note that all varieties require full sun to produce the lush color and growth we love to see.
Unless protected, bougainvilleas will suffer frost damage at 32 degrees, but they are perennial and will most likely recover. Do your best to ride it out and tolerate the unsightly frost damage, should it occur, and don't cut the plant back until it begins to leaf out again. This way you will know just how much of the plant may have been truly lost.
We carry a number of varieties at Harlow's suitable to your personal preferences. These include orange, fuchsia, purple, red, or pink bracts, and foliage can be solid or variegated. There are also bush varieties as opposed to vines. Our Garden Wizards will be happy to assist you in making the best choice for your needs.
The following are just a few examples of the stunning array of bougainvilleas available to beautify your home: 'Barbara Karst' is probably the most popular variety that you will see around town. It is an extremely heat tolerant vine that will grow to 20 ft. and has beautiful fuchsia bracts. The 'Bambino' varieties are perfect for patios and containers. They are compact shrubs growing to just 3 ft. high and available in a multitude of colors. 'Temple Fire' is another shrub with an interesting feature: the bracts start out coppery-bronze and turn to bright magenta.
