IT'S INSTRUMENTAL ...
| |
For our last Minyan Shirah before we break for the summer
months we have planned a service that will be a bit different. On Friday evening, June 18, musical
instruments will accompany our Kabbalat Shabbat service. What's this!
Musical instruments at a Friday evening service at Temple Aliyah?
How can that be? Recently, in response to interest expressed by a number of
congregants, Rabbi Perkins and our Ritual Committee discussed our traditional
policy of refraining from the use of musical instruments on Shabbat, and
ultimately decided to reaffirm it. However, during the summer months, our Friday
evening service concludes well before candle-lighting time. Rabbi Perkins suggested, and the Ritual
Committee has agreed, that we explore the use of musical instruments to
accompany the early part of the Friday evening services (up to and including
L'cha Dodi) during this part of the year. (This practice, which several congregations in our area and elsewhere
employ, is consistent with traditional Jewish practice.) June 18
is the first of these occasions when we will experience instrumental
accompaniment. Please join
us. |

Temple Aliyah Summer Outing Planned for July 11

Temple Aliyah's Green Committee is sponsoring an all-ages summer outing to Spectacle Island, the "eco-island" that is one of the islands in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park. Opened in 2006, the island has five miles of walking trails, picnic areas, a marina, swimming beaches, fishing, and an environmentally friendly visitor center.
We will be taking the 9:30 am ferry from Long Wharf to the island on Sunday, July 11. There are free ranger-led tours of the island at 10am and 12pm that day, as well as a free fishing clinic at noon. There is also live music performed by an ensemble of musicians from the Berklee Music School, from noon until 4 pm.
If you would like to join us on July 11, RSVP to Laura Kaufman. If we have a large enough group, we can order ferry tickets in advance at a discounted fare. Rain date will be July 18.
This is the first of many terrific events being planned promoting appreciation of and respect for nature, in this coming year's Temple wide theme, "Judaism and the Environment". Stay tuned for information about future events, including an expedition to Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire this fall.
