Greetings!

Welcome to the August 14th issue of Swing the Bat!  We've been getting great projects to write about and lots of positive feedback about this letter.

Help keep it going!  Please remember to submit content and story ideas to Jessica Irons!
Foxconn 46" HDTV Packaging

Foxconn, a contract manufactuer for Vizio, recently awarded Sonoco Tijuana with the packaging business for their new 46"Fantasia HDTV series for 2013.

Sonoco had to compete against RK Foam and KB Foam, both of whom are Asian molders, for the business.  In the electronics packaging industry, pricing margins are very tight and molders like RK and KB win bids for business due to razor thin margins and larger equipment.

Sonoco won this job because of our good relationship with the Foxconn purchasing department and our good work in the past.

New Honda TransGuard Job for Sonoco Butner

The Sonoco Protective Solutions plant in Butner, NC has just recently launched a new TransGuard program for the Side Airbag Module for the 2014 Honda Accord.

This airbag module is made by Autoliv Americas Manufacturing in Ogden, Utah and needed to have a returnable packaging tote designed for it that would protect the modules during shipment along the 1700 mile journey from Ogden Utah to Marysville, Ohio.

The engineering team in Owosso, Michigan stepped up and designed a TransGuard Stand Alone Tote to protect the airbag modules from shock and vibration - especially important with airbags because they have active propellant inside of them.

Please contact Dave Nicley or Dale Kalmerton for more details.

Rheem Tankless Water Heater Packaging

Sonoco was recently awarded some new packaging business for Rheem's High-Efficiency Tankless Water Heater.  This is the second project Sonoco has won with the Rheem Tankless Group and has helped us build momentum in a growth industry for Rheem.

With this project, Sonoco engineers were able to replace 13 packaging pieces with 2 molded Arcel endcaps and one fabricated PE support piece.  This provided a cost savings from not only the raw material aspect, but from the labor aspect as well since packing the product in 3 pieces is much quicker than packing it in 13 pieces.  Sonoco engineers were also able to use the existing box from the old packaging, as well as standardize the end caps so that they work for either the indoor or outdoor model.

Additionally, this pack passes the FedEx Certification test, which means that if a unit is damaged, Rheem will not be financially responsible.  This project was a team effort with sales, procurement, engineering, and management all involved.  The job will start up soon in the Tijuana, MX plant.
