Sonoco Protective Solutions gets Tooling Order for Airsep O2 Concentrator Packaging

Airsep, a medical device manufacturer, visited the Arlington Heights Innovation Center at the end of May to discuss their needs for packaging their Inensity Line Oxygen Concentrator.  Sonoco engineers worked with the customer's prouduct to design and test packaging for the unit, while the marketing group made presentations about our business and sustainability.

The customer was impressed with our capabilities and presentations and very much liked how well he was treated by everyone.  An impressed customer leads to an order and Sonoco recently received the tooling order for production of the packaging parts.

The customer was also impressed with how quickly we were able to get him quotes, letters, etc.  The tooling order is the first step, and now we'll get a production order in a couple months.

Additionally, at the meeting, we enganged the customer about using an EPAC concept for one of their other units.  They were very intrigued and agreed to send a test unit for the engineers to work on.

Overall, it was a very productive day - we swung the bat, hit the ball, and knocked it out of the park!  Thanks to all of those who helped!

Sonoco PPD and Legacy Protexic Join Forces, Help Whirlpool With Quality Issues

Whirlpool was having quality issues with Alpha dryers because of front impact during shipment. The front curvature and knob of the Maytag Alpha Dryer unit protruded beyond the existing corner posts, making it vulnerable during shipment.  In order to pass internal testing, Whirlpool developed a "quick fix" by using a piece of fabricated PE foam to protect the dryer knob, but that was a costly solution.

Legacy Protexic & Sonoco PPD stepped up to help Whirlpool develop a new front corner post using EPS and a Sonopost to replace the fabricated foam solution and improve the test results. Sonoco will begin running the first trials of the parts in early July out of the Findlay, OH facility.

Sonoco Solves Whirlpool Pedestal Packaging Concerns, Improves User Friendliness

Whirlpool was having issues with their 15" pedestal packs produced in their Clyde, OH facility. The current packaging was having trouble passing the Whirlpool internal testing and was having issues when stacked in a warehouse environment.

Protexic engineer Jeff Budde, along with Whirlpool engineers were able to redesign the current EPS packaging and solve the packaging concerns as well as create a more user friendly pack at the assembly line. The number of required "touches" and ergonomic concerns with the original packaging helped influence the ultimate solution.  This project is scheduled for production in Q3 of 2012 in our Findlay, OH facility.

 Appliance Design Article Generates Leads
Phillips Medical Interested in EPAC Application

In February of 2012, Sonoco Protective published their first article in Appliance Design.  It discussed how our molded foam components can be used as the inside of a product to help reduce the amount of required screws & fasteners, route cables, provide protection, insulate from vibration, and much more.

After having read the article, an engineer from Philips Medical reached out to us via our website about an EPAC application for a ventilator.  When sales followed up, they discovered that the article was to thank for giving Sonoco this opportunity.

Is there a subject or idea in your market that we could write an article about?  Technical publications are always looking for new content, and you might be surprised to learn how excited they'd be to publish an article for you!
