TRAINING TIPS
from Certified Trainer Jason Beasley

Anyone can train their dog successfully as long as they are consistent, patient and above all, able to make it fun! Here are 5 important factors to remember while training:

  1. Be consistent & persistent. These are the keys to training success.
  2. Use plenty of praise and treats when training. Use your dog's favorite treats (rewards). Your dog will be more motivated, and therefore more focused.
  3. Don't expect too much too soon. Dogs, like children, require plenty of repetition.
  4. Keep training sessions short & focused. Never attempt to train your dog when you are not well or do not have the time to focus.
  5. Play with your dog during training. Make your sessions fun for both of you and be sure to end each training session on a positive note.

These guidelines provide the foundation for effective dog training. There are different methods of training that can be applied. One method can work on one breed, while another may work on a different breed of dog. The important thing is to find the method that works best for your dog to prevent your dog from developing behavioral problems later on.

Pets & Their People

A Rescue Story

By Tiffany Beasley - Willow's Oak

THEN
I didn't find Layla. She found me. Layla is a gentle, beautiful "benji" dog who was abandoned in our neighborhood 2 yrs ago. She had a family one day, and the next day, they were gone.

She started wandering to the Willow's Oak parking lot for food but I could never get close enough to touch her. She looked so sad, lost and lonely.  I tried for weeks to catch her, but my attempts always failed. Then one October afternoon the dark clouds appeared and a torrential downpour began. Relentless rain continued for 2 days and Layla's daily visits ceased suddenly. I couldn't bear it! I put on my cobweb filled rubber boots and drove to her abandoned house. After trudging through mud filled puddles calling out "little doggie, I finally spotted her crawling out from underneath a derelict shed. She was drenched; her fur was caked with mud. I kneeled down and she jumped into my arms. Layla had had enough. She knew she needed help and she finally found the courage to trust me.

Dr. Bill at Animal Care Hospital told me the heartbreaking news. Layla was malnourished, pregnant and had severe heartworms. Without immediate treatment, she would die. With treatment her puppies would not survive. After making the agonizing decision we started her lengthy heartworm treatments. She had her good days and her bad days, but our little Layla had the will to survive and she did.
NOW

Today, she is my constant companion. When I am at the kennel, she is by my side. If I leave, she is waiting eagerly in the driveway when I return. She is my daughter's best friend and I can't imagine a world without Layla in it.

I didn't find Layla, she found me. And my life is so much fuller with her in it!

Pet Product Pick

In this section we will give our candid opinion as pet professionals regarding new and existing pet related products on the market. We do not sell, endorse or profit from the sale of these products in any way. We provide these reviews as a service to our readers and their furry companions. Please feel free to let us know if you agree or disagree with our assessments by sharing your pets' reaction by email or Facebook.

My husband, Jason, and I agreed that The Kong had to be our first product pick. The sheer number of different "indestructible" chew toys on the market today is overwhelming. Wander through your local pet store, you will be amazed at the array of bones and toys designed to tempt Fido away from your $100 pair of new shoes.  In our opinion, nothing beats The Kong. It comes in a variety of sizes to accommodate your Teacup Poodle or your Great Dane. The trick is knowing how to fill it for hours of indestructible doggie pleasure.

First, know which treats are your dog's favorites. Then begin the "layered filling." For example, put in a spoonful of peanut butter then add some dog biscuits on top. After that add a small amount of solid canned food and top it off with more dog biscuits and peanut butter.  This method will keep most dogs entertained for extended periods of time.

With proper filling, the Kong can also be used as a motivational tool for dog training. Kong's can be purchased at most local pet stores and prices range from $6.00-$16.00 depending on the store and the size.
