Our Monroe Community CARES!
I cannot imagine how this past school year would have existed without the generosity of our Monroe Parent Organization (MPO), and our many Monroe families that contribute to the needs of our students. As you well know, school supplies, snacks, clothes, and our food drives are in constant demand due to life circumstances. Many of you volunteer your time throughout the year in our office, chaperoning dances/socials/field trips, managing our book fairs, getting us ready at the start of the year, and helping us wrap up at the end of the year, despite your already- busy schedules. The list can go on and on in describing everything our Monroe families do to make our school successfully function. As a counselor, and a staff member, words cannot express my GRATITUDE for your willingness to not only give, but to see a need, and reach out and care through your giving.
It is because of an awesome family community that Monroe Middle School can encourage students to grow, learn, and more importantly, care for one another as they become mature citizens. It is our desire that our students give back to their local community someday as adults.
Thank you so much for your generous donations, and for being role models in our community that encourage our students to think of others, and be responsible and caring citizens.
Wishing you a safe and happy summer!
Shirley Madathil, Counselor

Parents of children with food allergies now have a worry-free camp environment for their children. Our cooks prepare most of the food from scratch, using fresh ingredients. All the manufactured products at Camp Blue Spruce are carefully vetted and will mostly come from allergen-aware companies.
Oregon's great outdoors will make Camp Blue Spruce the highlight of your child's summer. We are accepting campers now and with only one week available (August 19 - 24), the 56 slots will fill up fast. Priority is given to children with food allergies, ages 10 - 14.
Check out the website for more information:

Students can use PE
lock again
You may use your PE lock again next year. We do suggest that you write the combination on a piece of paper and tape it to the lock; combinations are easily forgotten over the summer.

Lost and found has lots of items to be claimed
All unclaimed lost and found will be sent to a local nonprofit organization at the end of the school year. If your student has lost items, please have them check the lost and found.

Is your student going to be 15 this summer?
If your student plans on getting a driver's permit, you will need to obtain proof of enrollment from Monroe (not Sheldon) prior to the last day of school as DMV requires this information. Without it, they will not allow your child to take the test. |
The office cannot make change
Quite frequently a student comes to the office in the morning with a $20 bill to get change so they can get a morning snack, eat breakfast, purchase a planner, pay a bill, etc. This is just a reminder that the office keeps very little money in the till and most of the time cannot make change. Please help us avoid frustration by sending small bills, ($5 or $1) or a check made payable to Monroe for the correct amount, with your student. We appreciate your support.

Dear Reba,
I am the students from Monroe who have had the good luck to have you as my school secretary. I want to thank you for all you have done to make me feel welcome at Middle School. When I first arrived, I was scared and I did not know what do. You helped me get my planner, my supplies, my PE lock, and everything else I needed. You helped me feel secure and you also encouraged me to speak up for myself and start the process of being in charge of my own education. Your laugh made me smile and I will always know that whatever I may need, I can start by asking you.
I am the parents of Monroe students and I have marveled at all you have done to help my family. You organized all of the public events, from the 5th grade orientation to honor roll to the promotion ceremony. All of these are classy and incredibly well-organized; they make me proud to be a Monroe community member. When our family has had any need, you have worked with us to figure out fees to support us and allow us to give what we can when we can. You are patient, attentive, and responsive and you never give an answer that is not well researched and fair.
I am the staff of Monroe. I rely on you to design and implement our yearly budget and to help me spend my money in the most economical way. You make sure my pay is right and help me answer any questions I have. You are the one who helps me with my leave or my absences, find a guest teacher or instructional assistant, and staff my classroom in a pinch. You are the heart and the soul of the school and it scares me that you are leaving!
Finally, I am the principal of Monroe Middle School. When I came here, you immediately let me know who the boss really was. After our first year together, you eventually let me use the school credit card. You kept me from making mistakes, listened to me vent, helped me make some of my most difficult decisions, and never broke a confidence. Your guidance and counsel has been critical to my success and your sense of humor and perspective make our time in the office delightful. You consistently work above and beyond, have accumulated about a decade of comp-time, and will leave a lasting legacy of doing whatever it takes to give Monroe community the best educational experience in Eugene.
Sincerely,
The Monroe Community |
Ellis Island simulation activity for 8th graders
When: Wed, 5/23rd(Periods 1, 2,3)
Where: Large Gym
All eighth graders will have the opportunity to participate in a simulation that shows how immigrants came through Ellis Island to make the United States their new home. Students will be preparing for this activity within their language arts classes by taking on an identity of an immigrant from a European culture. While this is the area of focus for this simulation, it is part of a unit that includes study of immigration from the entire world.
In order to enhance this activity, we encourage students to wear costumes and bring props. Items should not be new, so we suggest checking around the house, elderly relatives' closets, and possibly local stores such as Goodwill, Value Village, or St. Vincent de Paul. Costume/Prop Ideas:
Boys: fedora hat, cap, vest, long-sleeved shirts, small leather suitcase, small trunk, suspenders, etc.
Girls: scarf, apron, shawl, long skirt, cloth bag (purse), small basket, bonnet, etc. Students should plan to bring items on the day of the simulation. The activity will take place during Periods 1, 2 and 3 of that day. We are looking forward to this fun experience!
We need volunteers! Contact Peggy Blair at the school or go to the Monroe website to visit the Ellis Island page. There you'll find all the information plus a link to email Peggy to volunteer. |
Important information for all 8th grade parents Eighth grade Promotion Ceremony Tickets are required. Tickets will be required to enter the 2012 eighth grade promotion ceremony. Each family of an eighth grader will be issued a total of four tickets. In addition, a number of tickets will be held in reserve for families wanting more than four. Families not requiring four tickets are encouraged to return them to the school office. The four tickets per family will be available May 14-18 for pick-up by adults (must be signed for) in the main office. Any family not picking up their tickets at this time will have their four tickets given to their student, May 21-25. Students will also sign indicating they have received the tickets. Beginning May 29, adults may pick up one additional ticket per day on a first come, first serve basis until June 11. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door, first come, first serve. Special seating. Special seating will be accommodated (wheelchairs, walkers). Please let the office know by Thursday, June 7, if you anticipate anyone with special needs attending the ceremony. Timing. The ceremony and dance will take place on Monday, June 11. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Only those with tickets will be admitted. At approximately 7:30 p.m. (or immediately after the conclusion of the promotion ceremony), a dessert/reception will be held for all students and guests in the courtyard. The dance, for Monroe eighth grade students only, will begin at 8 p.m. in the cafeteria and ends promptly at 10 p.m.
Eighth grade schedule Eighth grade students follow a different schedule than the sixth and seventh graders at the end of the school year. School ends for eighth graders right after the promotion ceremony and dance on June 11. Monroe eighth graders are then considered high school students. (The last day of school for sixth and seventh graders will be Tuesday, June 12. The schedule for eighth graders is as follows. Thursday, June 7: Eighth graders have a no backpack day. All eighth graders who have their obligations completed (books and track uniforms turned in, fines paid, etc. - see yearbook distribution article below) will receive their yearbooks 5th period and have a signing party in the courtyard. Friday, June 8: Eighth grade trip. For students who are not going on the trip, study hall will be provided. Monday, June 11: Eighth grade students report to the large gym at 1:35 p.m. Rehearsal for the eighth grade promotion ceremony will take place in the large gym beginning at 1:45 p.m. Eighth graders will be released to go home when practice is over at approximately 2:45 p.m. All eighth graders participating in the evening celebration should be at rehearsal. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. The dance is over at 10:00 p.m. Eighth graders need to take their projects home at the end of this evening.

6th Grade End-of-Year Activity Day This year the sixth graders will again be going to the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis on Friday, June 8th. We will leave Monroe by 9:30 a.m. and return at about 3:00 p.m. Students will need to bring a bathing suit, a change of clothes and a towel, as well as a sack lunch (and additional snacks & drinks if desired as there is not a snack bar at Osborn.). Notes: Students can order a sack lunch from the cafeteria and pay for it in the normal way.
Students may wear an over-sized T-shirt over the swim suit if they wish. Students may also make use of the spectator area at Osborn if they choose not to swim. Also, all students might want to bring an extra sweatshirt if the weather is on the cool side.
We hope you'll encourage your child to take part in this special activity. It is a relaxed time and the students had a lot of fun last year. If you haven't seen the blue information and permission slip, have your child see their social studies teacher.
7th Grade End-of-Year Trip
This year we have organized a fun day for seventh graders at Camp Harlow in Eugene on Friday, June 8th. We are looking forward to a variety of activities that include a rock wall, go carts, bumper boats, swimming pool, miniature golf, and a variety of other indoor and outdoor games. Students should bring a sack lunch (or order one from the cafeteria), and a set of clothes to change if needed and for inclement weather, and a one piece swimsuit if they wish to use the pool. We will be traveling by bus and depart Monroe at 9:15 am and return to the school by 3:15 pm. We would love to have parents join us as chaperons. Interested parents should contact their child's language arts teacher or indicate their interest on the permission slip. Permission slips were sent home May 1st. |
Distribution of yearbooks Yearbooks will be issued to eighth graders fifth period on June 7 and to sixth and seventh graders June 12 to those students who have paid for a yearbook and have returned all textbooks, library materials, track uniforms, and, school fees and all cafeteria charges paid. Also, all detention time must be completed and all fines paid. If these items are not completed, yearbooks will be held and distributed when school is out that day. Please, take care of these items so you will not be disappointed.
To avoid the rush of last minute buying or frantic phone calls home, please check the paid list in the office to see if you have paid for a yearbook. May 31 is the last day to purchase one if they are still available.
Did you remember to purchase your yearbook? If not, May 31 is the last day to pay for one if they are still available, so you still have time. Each year we have students who are disappointed because they think their parents have paid for a yearbook, when they really haven't. Please check the paid list posted in the office hallway. If you have questions, we encourage you to talk to Reba before May 31. The cost of the yearbook is $30.00.

Congratulations to Honor Roll Recognition students!
We were very pleased to recognize students on Fri., 4/27, at a special Honor Roll Recognition. Over 240, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students listed below were honored by the staff and Superintendent Sheldon Berman. Students earned a 3.50 grade point average or above for third trimester 2010-11, and first and second trimester 2011-12. These are the actual grade point averages earned in consecutive semesters, not accumulated grade point averages. This recognition is always one of the highlights at the end of the year. Eighth grade students with an * have maintained a 4.00 GPA for three years.
