Congrats Carpe Librum!  Monroe Middle School's Oregon Battle of the Books team competed in the State OBOB competition in Salem on Sat., April 14 and won title of State Champions!  They beat out the best 15 teams in the state for the 6th to 8th grade division
Congratulations to Drew Jacobson, Dalton Lee, Erika Moe, Sara Montenegro and their alternate, Kira Ward, for their success!  Although several other 4J teams have competed at the state level, this is the first time a Eugene 4J School district team has taken the state title in any division.  Congratulations to ALL of this year's OBOB participants for their reading successes.  The complete list of books for next year's competition will be available in a few weeks.  Way to go, Carpe Librum!

Talent Show

Monroe's Talent Show will be held one night only -Friday, June 1st, at 7:00 P.M. in the cafeteria

Suggested admission donation is $3.00 kids, $5.00 adults, kids under 5 free. Hope to see you there!

The office cannot make change

Quite frequently a student comes to the office in the morning with a $20 bill to get change so they can get a morning snack, eat breakfast, purchase a planner, pay a bill, etc. This is just a reminder that the office keeps very little money in the till and most of the time cannot make change. Please help us avoid frustration by sending small bills, ($5 or $1) or a check made payable to Monroe for the correct amount, with your student. We appreciate your support.

Monroe Outreach Resources for Everyone page (M.O.R.E)  is a designated page on our school's website full of links to culturally aligned enrichment opportunities available to area students and their families.  Click here to check it out.

Eighth grade Promotion Ceremony
Tickets are required. Tickets will be required to enter the 2012 eighth grade promotion  ceremony. Each family of an eighth grader will be issued a total of four tickets. In addition, a number of tickets will be held in reserve for families wanting more than four. Families not requiring four tickets are encouraged to return them to the school office.

The four tickets per family will be available May 14-18 for pick-up by adults (must be signed for) in the main office. Any family not picking up their tickets at this time will have their four tickets given to their student, May 21-25.  Students will also sign indicating they have received the tickets. Beginning May 29, adults may pick up one additional ticket per day on a first come, first serve basis until June 11. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door, first come, first serve.

Special seatingSpecial seating will be accommodated (wheelchairs, walkers). Please let the office know by Thursday, June 7, if you anticipate anyone with special needs attending the ceremony.
Timing. The ceremony and dance will take place on Monday, June 11. Doors will open at 6 p.m.  Only those with tickets will be admitted. At approximately 7:30 p.m. (or immediately after the conclusion of the promotion ceremony), a dessert/reception will be held for all students and guests in the courtyard. The dance, for Monroe eighth grade students only, will begin at 8 p.m. in the cafeteria and ends promptly at 10 p.m.

Eighth grade schedule
Eighth grade students follow a different schedule than the sixth and seventh graders at the end of the school year. School ends for eighth graders right after the promotion ceremony and dance on June 11. Monroe eighth graders are then considered high school students. (The last day of school for sixth and seventh graders will be Tuesday, June 12. The schedule for eighth graders is as follows.
Thursday, June 7:  Eighth graders have a no backpack day. All eighth graders who have their obligations completed (books and track uniforms turned in, fines paid, etc. - see yearbook distribution article below) will receive their yearbooks 5th period and have a signing party in the courtyard.
Friday, June 8:  Eighth grade trip. For students who are not going on the trip, study hall will be provided.
Monday, June 11:  Eighth grade students report to the large gym at 1:35 p.m. Rehearsal for the eighth grade promotion ceremony will take place in the large gym beginning at 1:45 p.m. Eighth graders will be released to go home when practice is over at approximately 2:45 p.m. All eighth graders participating in the evening celebration should be at rehearsal.
Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. The dance is over at 10:00 p.m. Eighth graders need to take their projects home at the end of this evening.

Distribution of yearbooks

Yearbooks will be issued to eighth graders fifth period on June 7 and to sixth and seventh graders June 12 to those students who have paid for a yearbook and have returned all textbooks, library materials, track uniforms, and, school fees and all cafeteria charges paid. Also, all detention time must be completed and all fines paid. If these items are not completed, yearbooks will be held and distributed when school is out that day. Please, take care of these items so you will not be disappointed.

To avoid the rush of last minute buying or frantic phone calls home, please check the paid list in the office to see if you have paid for a yearbook. May 31 is the last day to purchase one if they are still available.

Did you remember to purchase your yearbook? If not, May 31 is the last day to pay for one if they are still available, so you still have time. Each year we have students who are disappointed because they think their parents have paid for a yearbook, when they really haven't. Please check the paid list posted in the office hallway. If you have questions, we encourage you to talk to Reba before May 31. The cost of the yearbook is $30.00.

Have an incoming 6th grader next year?

Monroe middle school has a dedicated incoming 6th grade page where you can get information and dates on the transition process to Monroe.

There are several upcoming meetings to help answer questions about the transition to high school.  Click here for more information and dates.

Also, click here to go to the Monroe website's 8th grade page.

Congratulations

Takayla Johnson

Each year Eugene 4j Food Services has a culinary competition where students are asked  to submit  their recipes. This year Takayla  Johnson was picked to be a finalist. She won her chief's apron and hat as well as receiving a certificate and medal for her "Breakfast in a Mug".  Takayla say she entered because she likes to cook and frequently make meals at home. She wants to continue in the culinary arts as a future career.

Honor Roll Recognition 4/27

One of the highlights at the end of the school year is our Honor Roll Recognition which will be held on Friday, 4/27 from 8:00-9:00am in the school cafeteria. Doors open at 7:40am. Muffins, bagels, juice and milk will be served.

Students who have earned a 3.50 grade point average or above for third trimester 2010-2011 and the first and second trimesters 2011-2012 will be invited to attend. Because 6th graders were not at Monroe last year, they will be invited to attend based on first and second trimester grades.

Students will be sent an invitation via US mail to attend the event. If a student does not receive an invitation and thinks s/he should, please check with Reba in the office.

Please note, we do not use accumulated grade point averages; it is the actual GPA earned in consecutive trimesters that determine if a student is invited to this event.

Students will be seated at reserved tables. Parents may also attend this event, however seating is limited.

IMPORTANT:
OAKS Testing Information

Dear Monroe Parent/Guardian,

State testing at each grade level continues to take place in the upcoming weeks. All students in grades 6-8 are administered the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) tests online each year as required by the State of Oregon.  Currently, students have the opportunity to take OAKS up to three times in each subject per school year as determined by schools or districts.

Effective January 2012, and going into full effect next school year (2012-13), the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) will restrict districts from retesting students in grades 3 - 8 that have met or exceeded the state achievement standard on OAKS tests unless parents notify the school that their child may be retested.  For the remainder of this current school year, ODE is permitting districts to continue to retest students that have met or exceeded the state achievement standards on the OAKS tests as necessary, unless parents specifically notify the school that they do not want their child retested.

For this school year, if you do not want your child retested if they have already met or exceeded the state achievement standards, please notify your school's OAKS Coordinator, Cecelia Brands, at brands@4j.lane.edu or complete the form below and return to your school. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Brands or Mr. Tromba (tromba@4j.lane.edu).
