Great News! Goes Out..... Bite San Diego- Coronado
This month we decided to try something completely different by taking a culinary walking tour! The tour was booked through Bite San Diego, a company that showcases some of San Diego's top neighborhoods: Downtown/ Little Italy, Coronado, Old Town, La Jolla, Julian, and Hillcrest. We were intrigued by the Coronado tour as it is an area we don't often visit and it offered a diverse group of eateries. The total walk for each tour is about 1.5 miles, which does not include the walk back to your car.
The tour started promptly at 2:00pm and ended a little after 5:00pm. Our tour guide, Noel, was very friendly, personable, and easy to get along with. He had an abundance of information on the history of Coronado which he told throughout the tour. Our first stop was Peohe's, located just on the water and a few steps away from Coronado Ferry Landing, (the tour's meeting place). The chef came out to talk to our group for a few minutes about the sustainability of their restaurant which was definitely a treat. At Peohe's we had a tasting of their coconut shrimp which was absolutely delicious! This was a great way to start the tour.
After Peohe's we took a stroll past the waterfront and stopped at Coronado Firehouse Bar and Grill. During this portion of the tour we were able to talk amongst our fellow tour companions and have a more casual experience. As Noel informed us that the establishment was indeed the original firehouse of Coronado, we were served smoky sliders. The smoky sliders are filled with slow-smoked pulled pork and bbq sauce. Our next stop was Alexander's Pizza. There we were served Scooby Snacks and two types of pizza: Mystic and Carnivore. The mystic pizza was a vegetarian pizza with sun dried tomatoes and a blend of three cheeses. The Carnivore truly lived up to its name with pepperoni, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, and ground beef. The scooby snacks were dough balls stuffed with pepperoni and mozzarella.
The next stop was probably our favorite. Coronado Taste of Oils sets this tour aside from all the others as you get to sample a wide variety of vinegars and oils(just like here at Great News!). We were offered chocolate ice cream with chocolate balsamic and frangelico, this was a very tasty treat! After the sweet and savory tasting from Taste of Oils we stopped in at Fuzziwigs, an old time candy store. Fuzziwigs definitely takes you back to your childhood with candies that you probably haven't seen in a while.
Our last stop along the tour was at the historic hotel ,The Hotel Del's wine bar Eno. Bite San Diego provides two cheese platters for the group but wine is optional for each guest to purchase separately. We were able to choose three cheeses as a group and we decided to have the La Tur (soft cheese blended with cow, goat and sheep milk), Roquefort (blue cheese with sheep milk), and Pondhopper (firm cheese with goat milk). As wine and cheese are the perfect duo we indulged ourselves with a chardonnay flight (three samples of various chardonnays). Eno was a wonderful way to end the tour.
Overall, it was the perfect day to enjoy a culinary walking tour and it was a unique, informative way to explore the beautiful city of San Diego. We will definitely be checking out the other city tours.
