Great News! Goes Out..... Blind Lady Ale House
The Great News! Goes Out article will feature Kristin (Cooking School Director) and Kelsey (Cooking School Assistant Manager) as they sample various dishes around San Diego. Please feel free to email customerservice@great-news.com to recommend any restaurants you would like to see featured.
Blind Lady Ale House (BLAH) is a name we have heard plenty of times and wanted to see for ourselves what all the talk was about. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this restaurant it is located in Normal Heights on Adams Avenue. Living true to its name, BLAH offers more than two dozen craft brews (even root beer) on a direct-draft system, a true beer lovers dream. Their focus is not just on the craft brews but also on their pizza which is similar to a Neapolitan style with thin crust.
This is a fast, casual restaurant, where you order at the front and your food is delivered to your table. You can order all your food at once or keep the tab open to continue placing orders throughout your stay. First we ordered a bowl of the house roasted spicy beer nuts. The beer nuts were quite unique as they used three types of nuts: peanuts, almonds and pistachios. They were not too spicy and had a distinct chipotle flavor. YUM!

The mussels grabbed our attention, because we didn't expect to see them on a pizza menu. The Moules Frites were steamed with white wine, onions, leeks, fennel, whole grain mustard, cream, orange zest and herbs and came with Belgian Frites and three seasonal dipping sauces. The mussels came from Pacific Shellfish where we get most of our seafood for our cooking classes so we knew the quality would be spot on. Most of the vegetables came from Suzie's Farm, another purveyor we are familiar with and happy to see on menus everywhere. The mussels were the perfect size for a starter, not leaving us too full to eat our pizza.

Next we ordered two types of pizza: Egg & Bacon and House Chorizo. Each BLAH pizza serves about two hungry people. The Egg & Bacon Pizza came with egg, house made bacon, swiss chard, caramelized onion, Pecorino Romano, Fontina, tomato sauce, and truffle oil. We could smell the truffle oil on the way over to our table which got our taste buds ready. The egg was perfectly cooked and placed in the center of the pizza leaving an even amount of yolk on each slice. Eating this pizza is like having breakfast for dinner, who doesn't love that? The House Chorizo Pizza had house made chorizo, poblano chiles, Fontina, tomato sauce, and cotija cheese. The chorizo can be substituted for soy chorizo making this pizza vegetarian as well. If you love chorizo this is the pizza for you. The pieces of chorizo were extremely hearty and packed with authentic flavor.
Blind Lady Ale House is the perfect restaurant for any beer and pizza lover. Chances are we will see you there sometime this summer.

Cappie's Healthy Tip
Italian food can be delicious and healthy at the same time. When making your favorite pesto recipe, cut the olive oil in half and add 2-4 sun-dried tomatoes for more flavor. Also, save the cheese for the top, not only will you be cutting the fat, the pesto will toss with the pasta better. When choosing pasta, pick one that is made from high quality semolina durum wheat or whole grain durum wheat for more fiber and protein.
