Great News! Goes Out..... Barrio Star
The Great News! Goes Out article will feature Erika (General Manager), Kristin (Cooking School Director), and Kelsey (Cooking School Assistant Manager) as we sample various dishes around San Diego. Please feel free to recommend any restaurants you would like to see featured.
Barrio Star is a vibrant and energetic restaurant located on the corner of 5th and Nutmeg in Banker's Hill. It opened last year by Executive Chef/ Owner Isabel Cruz, who also owns six other restaurants in San Diego and Oregon including Isabel's Cantina located in Pacific Beach. Barrio Star is a Mexican "soul food" restaurant with an emphasis on fresh, local and organic ingredients. We decided to dine at Barrio Star for Taco Tuesday, one of the many San Diego Taco Tuesday specials. For their Taco Tuesday they offer tacos at $2.99 and their house margarita at $5.
We started the night off with some beverages from Barrio Star's great selection of innovative margaritas. Although the house margarita was on special we could not pass up their Blackberry Jalapeño Margarita and Hibiscus Margarita. The Blackberry Jalapeño Margarita has a deep smoky flavor and is made with roasted jalapeño tequila which gave the perfect kick. If you like spicy drinks this is a must have! The Hibiscus Margarita had a sweet and flavorful taste. This refreshing drink would be great on a hot summer day.

While we waited for our tacos we shared chips and guacamole. The seasoning on the chips was just right and you could definitely detect the fresh ingredients in the guacamole. The three of us shared a bowl of the tortilla soup which had a smooth texture and the spices created an ideal blend. This soup is great for an entrée or even spilt for an appetizer.

One of the most classic and mouth watering Mexican food dishes is the tamale. We could not pass up the Tamale de Pollo. The portion ratio between the chicken and masa was ideal. The masa for the tamale was not like most masa as it was so fluffy. Hands down, this is one of the best tamales we've ever had.

All Barrio Star's tacos use house-made corn tortillas prepared daily, need we say more? With the Taco Tuesday special you can order a la carte or mix and match. Between the three of us we ordered chicken, fish, steak, carnitas, and soyrizo. Each taco was served with fresh salsa made daily. For our veggie followers, Barrio Star offers two types of vegetarian options including the soyrizo and tofu. The soyrizo tacos were delicious and just like the real thing. We left feeling satisfied and we would all agree that we would come back to Barrio Star again.
