 FICRA Calendar and Events
Greetings!

Clean-up outside the Nichols Center

Fall has been full of events, activities and bustling volunteers here on Fox Island!  And the calendar looks to be full for the rest of 2011!

There is so much to do on the Island, we hope that everyone finds an event or two that is right up their alley. This week we have the Wildlife Forum, author night, and children's art class. Next week we Christmas Treeget to roll our turkey-stuffed selves in to the Nichols Center for game night, then we are off to holiday events with the Museums's Silent Action and Santa visit and the Nichols Center tree lighting, where Santa will return for another visit and the fabulous Wickline's Concert.

Astronomy Night last Sunday at the NCC was another wonderful event. Terry Mace invited esteemed University of Puget Sound Physics Professor Dr. Bernie Bates to give a great presentation about the Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence (SETI).  We look forward to more Astronomy Nights from Terry Mace and friends in the coming months for some more fascinating lectures and more star gazing (without the clouds and cold temperatures). Thank you Terry and Dr. Bates!

Enjoy these fun activities and we hope to see you soon!

Forum with the WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife
Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00

The Community Forum discussing wildlife on the Island, including

WA Fish and WLcoyotes, is almost here.  FICRA is pleased to have WA State Dept. of

Fish and Wildlife Biologist Tammy Schmidt speaking on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00 at the Nichols Community Center. She will be giving a 45 minute presentation on "Living with Wildlife" to our community.  We are also very happy to have Matt Stevens from the USDA coming as well. Mr. Stevens has over 20 years of experience with coyotes. Thank you to Sue Supplee for getting in contact with Mr. Stevens!

The FICRA Board hopes that this meeting will give Island residents a chance to learn about coyotes and how to protect themselves, their pets and children.  We also hope that the question and answer period will be beneficial for addressing your individual concerns.

FICRA has been in contact with Fish and Wildlife for many months regarding our Island coyote population. We hope this forum will be a benefit for everyone with concerns about coyotes. Fish and Wildlife has asked us to continue to direct people to their website regarding coyotes

We also continue to blog about this on our website: Coyote Tips

Author Reading at the Chapel on Echo Bay
Tuesday, November 15 from 7-9

Mostly Books Presents Author Stephanie Kallos this Tuesday, November 15 from 7:00pm-9:00pm - free! Stephanie Kallos, author of Broken for You, will be at the Chapel to discuss her books and sign copies. Join us for this free presentation with Jo Graffe, owner of Gig Harbor's Mostly BooksBookstore.

[email protected]

Here is the description of Stephanie's debut novel, from Amazon.com: National best seller and Today show Book Club selection, Broken for You is the story of two women in self-imposed exile whose lives are transformed when their paths intersect. Stephanie Kallos's debut novel is a work of infinite charm, wit and heart. It is also a glorious homage to the beauty of broken things. When we meet septuagenarian Margaret Hughes, she is living alone in a mansion in Seattle with only a massive collection of valuable antiques for company. Enter Wanda Schultz, a young woman with a broken heart who has come west to search for her wayward boyfriend. Both women are guarding dark secrets and have spent many years building up protective armor against the outside world. As their tentative friendship evolves, the armor begins to fall away and Margaret opens her house to the younger woman. This launches a series of unanticipated events, leading Margaret to discover a way to redeem her cursed past, and Wanda to learn the true purpose of her cross-country journey. Both funny and heartbreaking, Broken for You is a testament to the saving graces of surrogate families and shows how far the tiniest repair jobs can go in righting the world's wrongs.
