Be warned. You're going to get hungry after reading this note. I'm all about feeding my kids as healthy of a diet as possible. I try to steer clear of any white carbs and lots of trans fat. I love using this Montreal mom resource (montrealnutrition) to help figure out how to make my family healthy. Caryn is a great dietitian and I especially love her advice on preparing for school lunches. Her advice is this: |

Nutrition Tips
- start by using reusable containers. Try to make lunches "no waste" so kids understand that caring for the environment is important too. Click here for some options 2- Kid size food is the key to a successful lunchbox so that means cutting items to bite sized and holdable foods.
- Give a nice amount of options but keep portions small. Anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 a cup
- Feel free to give some baked goods but homemade ones that you can "sneak" some whole grain or flaxseed meal is the way to go. Much better than the saturated fat and preservatives you'll find in most pre-packaged items.
- Use your thermos! Heat up some leftovers from supper the night before or put some delicious soup in there.
- Make sure you add a nice protein like an egg salad sandwich or even just a hardboiled egg.
- Beverage should be water or milk. Juices are really just drinkable sugar.
- Send a little note on a napkin! Remember when your mum used to do that for you?
- If lunch came home not eaten then save it for an afternoon snack.
- Let your little ones help make lunch with you! |
