The Mindless Misconception

Robert F. Thompson

Some time ago I was speaking with a good friend of mine, one whom I consider a wise voice of reason in my life and a very experienced practitioner. We were discussing meditation and he made reference to those of us who practice, 'mindless' meditation-ahh yes, now I understood where he was coming from. This is a common misconception about those of us who practice the eastern forms of meditation. The thinking goes that we curl into a painful, cross-legged position on the floor and then force ourselves to sit there until all thinking ceases. This is neither the goal nor even achievable, at least not intentionally.

The mind is a thinking machine, that is what it does and frankly it does an amazing job of it. But that doesn't mean that it's especially wise, at least not all parts of it. To be correct, there are no goals in mediation, but I'll leave that topic for next month. What does happen from maintaining a practice is that the practitioner gains an awareness of what the mind is doing while it's doing it. This may sound a little crazy, I know. Now I'm not a neurologist, nor do I need to be. I don't know how this works, perhaps it's different parts of the brain performing different functions, but I do know that it does work.

What I am talking about here is not mindless meditation, it's mindfull meditation; an intrinsic awareness of mind, and that is a powerful tool. read more
