COGO Actions Regarding Lightsquared Interference with GPS
Submitted by Geney Terry, GISP, MGIS, and Cy Smith, GISP

As members of URISA's delegation to the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations, we wanted to inform you and bring you up to date on recent activities that may significantly impact GPS in this country. This is an issue that COGO and its member organizations have spent a good deal of time reviewing. At issue is a plan by a company named LightSquared, based in Reston, Virginia, to deploy a wireless broadband network within the United States. LightSquared promotes their project as a means to solve the digital divide, answering the Obama administration's challenge, and promoting the FCC's National Broadband Plan.  This is a laudable effort but there are serious repercussions to the planned implementation.

URISA Connect Webinar - An Introduction to URISA's GIS Capability Maturity Model for Local & Regional Agencies

Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Free for URISA members

How do municipalities know where their GIS development is in relationship to potential capability for similar agencies? Some agencies consider their GIS to be 'mature' because their implementation project has been completed and they are doing ongoing GIS operations and maintenance. But how do these agencies know if they are lacking basic GIS capability?

This presentation will be of value to managers to self-assess their GIS operation, determine areas for efficiency or effectiveness improvements, assess system risk factors, analyze capability gaps, and prioritize developments required for a mature GIS.
