"There is practically no activity that cannot be enhanced or replaced by knitting, if you really want to get obsessive about it."

Feature of the Month -

Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe Collection

This colourful collection of simple and easy to wear designs features Rowan's Kidsilk Haze Stripe.   With colours by Kaffe Fassett, this self-striping light-weight yarn, made of 70% super kid silk mohair & 30% silk, is getting rave reviews!  Each 50 gram ball is an impressive 420 meters and makes for an ideal sheer and gauzy fabric.  Or, if you love the patterns, but prefer a solid coloured garment, the original Kidsilk Haze has numerous colour options.

Always Something New

Some other new self-striping yarns from Noro include: Ayatori, a 60% wool, 40% silk, sport weight yarn with a lovely subtle sheen; and Karuta, a 40% silk, 30% wool, 30% cotton, loosely single plied, chunky weight yarn. Both yarns are super soft.

From our local artisan yarn company, Sweet Georgia, we have loads of new colours of Tough Love Sock, as well as Cashsilk Lace, Merino Silk Lace, and Cash Luxe Fine.

If you would like to seriously brighten your day, Selection Privada from Malabrigo is for you!  This aran weight, 100% merino wool,  is created using a novel system of hand dyeing. The yarn is the original Merino Worsted but hand painted with a different and much more labour intensive process so that the quantity and intensity of colour in each skein is impressively unique.

Our glitter queen, Amanda, is in love with the new Metallic Nubs and Lucci Sequins, which are great for embellishment on any project.

If you're looking for unique project ideas, three new books are a must see.

Knitted Fairies and Gothic Knits by Fiona McDonald both feature lovable and loathsome dolls to knit.  Whether it's just for fun or to create unforgettable gifts, both these books contain simple patterns for knitters of all levels.  Also, Fairytale Knits, by Katharina Ritter, contains 20 stunning knitting patterns for women and children that are inspired by fairytales, a favourite being the very attractive Snow White knitted stockings.

We are thrilled to have received a shipment of Julie Hoover's patterns.  Julie is an Anchorage based designer who creates clean and modern styles that flatter all shapes and sizes.  Some of her patterns include Tisse, En Cardre,  Decouvert, Decalage, Chaleur, as well as Insouciant, a perfect tee for summer, knit using Habu's Tsumugi Silk.

Project Ideas

Old Forge, featured in West Knits Book Three, is a big blanket that is worked from the centre outward.  The sun transitions into simple lace, followed by a knit/purl chevron pattern, finishing with a garter stitch edge.  Any worsted weight yarn would work well with this pattern, depending on the look and feel you desire.  Simple, yet stunning!

Valerie recently completed the Summer Shawl by Ruth Sorenson.  Using Kaunie Effektgarn, this shawl is knit in the round and steeked afterward.  Guaranteed to turn heads, this shawl, as it is aptly named, is perfect for summer evenings.  A sample is currently available for viewing at our Point Grey location.

Another favourite designer, Ysolda Teagues, has just released Whimsical Little Knits 3, which contains a series of fun little projects including socks, hats, shawls and more.  Sherman, featured on the left, is Alexa's favourite.  Suggested yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock, a sport weight yarn, which makes for a faster knit than most socks.
