October 2011 Newsletter

Huge congratulations to Alexa Ludeman & Emily Wessel on their first publication!

9 months of knitting includes nine patterns for babies, toddlers, and their parents, from striking lace and cables, to comforting knit and purl.  Thank you to everyone who showed up for the premier book launch!

Feature of the Month - Fleece Artist

We always love to support our Canadian suppliers and Fleece Artist has always remained one of our favourites.  Fleece Artist, located in Nova Scotia, was established in 1979 with a goal of supplying natural, one-of-a-kind, hand dyed fibre, and, in this regard, they never disappoint. Their selection of fibres and colours is exquisite and whenever we receive a shipment from them, we can't wait to open the box to see the treasures within.

Our latest shipment includes kits such as the Lady of the Lake Sweater featured on the right, as well as the Garter Stitch Jacket and the beautiful Soft Wavy Wrap.  We have also received more of Fleece Artist's Peter Rabbit yarn, a super soft choice, made from a 90% angora, 10% nylon blend.

Also, new kits have arrived from Hand Maiden Fine Yarn, the Fleece Artist label for luxury hand-dyed fibres, including the Bias Shawl,  Storm Water Shawl, and Devon's Toques.  For silk lovers,  we have just received more Mini Maiden, Lace Silk and Sea Silk yarns in a wide range of colours.   This is only a small example of our latest collection and new shipments are now arriving every second week so stay tuned for loads of new goodies!

Always Something New

Fast and funky scarves are still all the rage with the latest being Katia's Park Avenue and Aloha.  Plus we have a great selection of Triana, Triana Lux and Rizos.  Perfect for gifts, and ready in an evening!  Or, if you want an even quicker project, the One Hour Scarf by Sirdar provides instant gratification.

New from Misti Alpaca, Best of Nature, is a 100% baby alpaca worsted weight yarn dyed with natural dyes from vegetable and mineral sources.  It's buttery soft and perfect for cosy winter sweaters, hats or scarves.  Also from Misti Alpaca, Baby Me Boo, is another worsted weight hand paint, with textural hues of thick and thin baby alpaca, merino and bamboo in a variety of lovely colours.

For lots of project ideas, the Debbie Bliss Fall/Winter 2011 magazine has a wonderful selection focusing on black, white and gray, as well as some animal knits and pretty party pieces.  Vogue Knitting Fall 2011 also has a great selection of black, white and grey fair isle patterns, as well as fabulous ideas for cable and lace.  And, new from Interweave, the premier edition of Knit Wear, is packed with 25 elemental knit patterns, as well as the "perfect sweater," an easy sweater that can be made in four custom ways.

If winter weather is hard on your feet, Heel will make your feet worthy of hand-knit socks.  Available in spearmint, cucumber and scentless.

If you don't already follow us on facebook, it is a great way to keep up to date on all the fun new products that are arriving daily!

Project Ideas

Stephen West's Clockwork pattern featured on the right, is a striped garter stitch shawl/scarf, knit in two different colours, with slipped stitch columns and increases that combine to create a very unique shape.  A sample of this shawl, knit in Mini Maiden is available for viewing at our Point Grey location.

One of our favourites from the new Knit Wear magazine is the off-rib cardigan.  Knit in Madelintosh Merino, this asymmetrical cardigan is a stunning sleekly tailored sweater.

Liberty, featured in Rowan's City Retreat, is an easy to wear, hooded sweater with cable detail and front pockets.  Knit using Creative Focus Worsted, this sweater is certain to keep you warm and cozy!
