Feature of the Month - Rowan Belle Organic Aran

River Camp Knits, Amy Butler's second collection of knit projects that revolve around Rowan's  Belle Organic Aran, features a large selection of patterns inspired by her love of nature.  As she writes,

"It's all about barefoot afternoons spent in elegantly playful combos of loose crochet & knits that fall off a bare shoulder".

Tanks, ponchos, wraps, blankets, totes and the whimsical fishnet pillows featured on the right, are sure to inspire.  The new colours in this yarn are delightfully vibrant, bright and fresh for spring!

Always Something New

Other new Rowan yarns include Savannah, a lovely cotton/silk blend, perfect for summer knits and available in a wide range of desert colours.  Beautiful patterns using this yarn are included in the new Savannah Collection, with 12  designs for women, some samples of which are available for viewing at our Point Grey location.  Also, Panama, a sport weight yarn, which when worked in a project, shows off the unique contrast between the matte cotton, linen, and lustrous viscose that make this yarn so unique.  The accompanying Panama book also features beautiful women's sweater patterns, a favourite being the Mangoteen, a perfect sweater/dress to wear over leggings.  The new Rowan Summer Baby book is also a must see!

New for spring by Debbie Bliss is Bella, a cotton/silk/cashmere blend in a dk weight with a wide range of colours.  Her accompanying book Bella, will inspire you with her gorgeous sweater patterns including the stunning Flounce Jacket and Floral Bolero.  The Debbie Bliss Knitting Magazine Spring/Summer 2011 has also arrived featuring beautiful lace patterns, ideas for the home, and flower inspired accessories.

Two new yarns from Sublime include: Baby Silk & Bamboo, a super soft, dk weight, 80% bamboo, 20% silk blend; and, Tussah Silk DK, a luxurious silk/viscose blend that is machine washable.  The new Sublime Book #648 features  great baby patterns using Baby Silk & Bamboo.  Also new from Sublime, is Book #652, featuring lovely sweater patterns for men and women using cashmere merino silk dk; and, Book #649, The eighth little Sublime hand knit book with oodles of adorable baby patterns.

For those of us who want to include a personal touch, we are so excited to feature Sig'nits.  Sig'nits are die case beads that can be knit into your projects to identify them as your own.  Choose from bees, butterflies, dogs, cats and more.

Plus, the largest selection of knitting and crochet books, patterns, notions and more.

Project Ideas

Spud and Chloe's latest free baby sweater pattern is absolutely adorable.  This tiny cardigan, featured on the right, is for babies 0 - 3 months and is knit from the top down using Spud and Chloe Sweater, a perfect gift for any newborn.

For a Victorian style neckwarmer, the Julia Neckwarmer by Nina Machlin Dayton is stunning!  The lattice pattern and ruffles make this an incredibly feminine neckwarmer that can be personalized with funky buttons.  This pattern suggests using Malabrigo's Silky Merino and is available for download on Ravelry.

Francis Revisited by Beth Power is a classic roll neck sweater that can be dressed up or down.  When knit in Berroco's Ultra Alpaca, it's sure to get lots of attention.

Upcoming Events

We are so excited once again to participate in the 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer on behalf of the BC Cancer Foundation.  As many of you know, the Urban Yarns team raised over $9o,000 in 2010, and we are committed to doing our part again this year.  BC is in the forefront of cancer research, treatment and care, largely through the efforts of the BC Cancer Foundation and the support of thousands of British Columbians.  The members of our team may not be able to carry out research or directly treat cancer patients, but we can certainly ride from Vancouver to Seattle to support this important cause.

So, here's how you can help:  Drop in at either of our stores and donate a minimum of $10 to the Ride to Conquer Cancer.  At the same time, for an additional $10 you can enter a draw for a $200.00 Urban Yarns gift certificate.  For every 10 people that make a donation, one name will be drawn, so that translates into a 1 in 10 chance of winning!  This fund raiser will run continually until June 17th, the day before the ride.  This is a great way to help make cancer a thing of the past, and if you're a lucky winner, increase your stash.  Thank you for your support!
