Feature of the Month - Amy Butler

Incredibly creative US Designer Amy Butler's debut handknit collection, Midwest Modern Knits, introduces Belle Organic DK & Aran.  These yarns are a blend of cotton and wool, which makes for the perfect combination of softness, drape and wear.  The selection of projects, colours and yarn allow the collection to cross into all seasons.
In Amy's words, "My project designs are inspired by my Midwest Modern lifestyle.  I wanted to offer a unique mix of fashion, accessories and homewares that are fresh, modern, and approachable."

Upcoming Events

If you're interested in attending KAFFE FASSETT'S lecture entitled: SIMPLE SHAPES, SPECTACULAR COLOUR, get your tickets soon, as they are selling out fast.  This event will take place Friday, Oct. 1st from 7:30-9:00 at UBC Golf Club.  Tickets are $30.00.

In addition, BRANDON MABLY'S knit workshop only has a few spaces left.  As a reminder, his workshop is entitled Persian Poppy, and will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3rd from 10am-4pm with a one hour break for lunch.  Students will work from a Persian Poppy graph that will be provided.  Brandon will demonstrate the method of carrying yarn in fairisle and intarsia knitting, and then work with students as they apply the technique to their own knitting.  Attention will be paid to colour, texture, and pattern.  Everyone will work on a swatch using at least 12 colours; only the basic stocking stitch will be used.
Class participants should bring a selection of 6 light or bright colours for the poppy, plus 6 dark or deeper colours for the background.
This event will also be at UBC Golf Club.  Tickets are $135.00 and include lunch.

Both events will be followed by a wine and cheese party at Urban Yarns Point Grey location.  Ticket holders will be entitled to a 5% store-wide discount on the evening of either event.

Project Ideas

If you haven't noticed, we are always enamoured by the wonderfully creative  shawl patterns that are continually being designed.  The Coquille Shawl knit in Mini Mochi is another stunning creation, a free pattern of which is available on Knitty.  I personally love the Mini Mochi for this shawl, but any lace weight yarn would work.

Many of our staff had a fun evening crocheting a Pack o' Puppies Mitts by Spud and Chloe.  Made with any colour of Sweater, this pattern assortment is  perfect for beginner crocheters.  We have samples of these adorable pups at our Point Grey location.

The new Interweave Knits, Fall 2010 has a pattern for a Brattleboro Hat, knit in Malabrigo Merino Worsted.  Very stylish hat for fall that can be dressed up or down depending on the buttons you choose.
Community Corner

One of our loyal and lovely customers is downsizing and wanted to get rid of a significant portion of her stash.  She approached us to see if we could find good homes for it.  So, my husband and I arrived at her house and filled the back of our truck to the brim with yarn.  At first I was a little concerned as to whether I would be able to get rid of so much yarn, but after sending an email out to all of our wonderful staff, the whole stash was claimed.  Some of the charities it went to included the Children's Hospital, Hats for the Homeless, and Alanon.  All of them were absolutely thrilled with their gifts and I would like to thank Brenda for her incredibly generous donation!
Classes

We have a great selection of classes for beginner, intermediate, and experienced knitters at both of our locations.  Visit our website, or call us for details at 604-228-1122.
