Spotlight on our Consumers
Keokuk County Schools Tactics on Alcohol Abuse Reduction (KC STAAR) is a Safe and Drug Free Schools grant-funded program to reduce alcohol What is Life Connections?abuse within the four schools in Keokuk County, Iowa.  KC STAAR selected Reconnecting Youth three years ago, as part of their efforts to reach that goal.  Called "Life Connections" locally, RY is currently in three schools, and will have reached nearly 60 students by the end of this year.  Lynne Zoulek, KC  STAAR Project Director, spoke to us last month and shared their success stories, a student-made video, and testimonials from the RY students.  Get the whole story here...

Pam Duffy, RY CoordinatorThe Reconnecting Youth program was adopted at Highland High School in Sparta, Ohio in January of 2003, as a result of being awarded a Grant to Reduce Alcohol Abuse.  Since then, over 800 at-risk students have taken the course as the program has spread to six rural and urban high schools, including one alternative school, in central Ohio.  According to Pam Duffy, Prevention Coordinator for Maryhaven, the community healthcare provider implementing the program for the schools, "Our program (we call it "Positive Leadership") has been successful because teachers and staff have seen a change in student behavior and grades because of RY."  Read on to discover Pam's tips for making RY a success...

RY: Helping at-risk Navajo youthIn 2008, Red Mesa Unified School District was awarded a Grant to Reduce Alcohol Abuse (GRAA) and chose to adopt Reconnecting Youth to support targeted at-risk youth at their two high schools. In accordance with the design, students took RY voluntarily and to fulfill an elective credit. Benita McKerry, the RY Coordinator for Red Mesa USD, made a short video about RY on her reservation.  Watch the video!  She also wrote us about her experience with RY.  Read what Benita says about RY in the Navajo community...

Everyone loves hearing your success stories. Please let us know if you have an inspirational RY or CAST story you'd like others to know about, and we may be able to include it in a future newsletter.
