Textile Art News from Liz Alpert Fay                              October 2011

Hello,

It was a busy summer. Most of it good, but Hurricane Irene's visit was a bit trying. We were without power for six days, but fortunate to escape with very little damage.

  Farnsworth Entry

The BIG NEWS this month is the opening of the Beyond Rugs! exhibit on September 24 at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. This show represents the first time Hooked ART has been shown in a major art museum. When I arrived a day early, visitors were already asking if they could get into the show and it seemed like the whole town was buzzing about it!

 Reception

A rather exclusive reception was held Friday night with only the participating artists, lenders, patrons and museum administration in attendance. It was held in the library upstairs from the gallery, which is a comfortable room with overstuffed chairs and a fireplace. Champagne and hors d'ouevre were served. The gallery was opened and all were treated to the unveiling of the show.

I gave a presentation on the world of contemporary hooking entitled Contemporary Hooking: A Fine Art to an enthusiastic group. I showed the work of 29 artists from the United States, Canada, Australia, and England - 66 works of art in all. I used the following definition of Contemporary Hooked Art as my guidelines in choosing the work to be shown: "An original work of art designed and created by the artist which goes beyond the traditional use of the medium". I was interested in showing innovation and as much variety as possible.

For those not able to attend (the lecture was sold out!) and who are interested in seeing the presentation, the museum taped the event and will make it available on their web site. They also plan to produce a DVD. I will send out a notice and add links on my web site when these become available. I hope you will be as inspired as I was after viewing this incredible collection of work!

The exhibit itself is absolutely beautiful! Curators Millie Peladeau and Jane Bianco did an exceptional job. The artists are all pleased to see their work in such a professional setting. If you are able to make the trip, I highly recommend it! You can view the exhibit catalogue online here. The Farnsworth also has other wonderful exhibits going on and the quaint little town is full of great restaurants, interesting shops and galleries.

Enjoy this colorful season!

Liz

Featured Work

It's Not What it Seams

48" by 40", Seams from cashmere sweaters, care tags and extra buttons still attached. Hand hooked on linen.

Seams

While exhibiting at a recent show, I was approached by an artist who creates wearable art from recycled Cashmere sweaters. Her goal is to have an environmentally friendly "no waste" business and she was interested to see if I could make use of the seams she cuts off the sweaters.

At first, paying money for someone else's waste seemed kind of crazy to me, but my curiosity, and then later my imagination, got the better of me. Before long, I had ordered thousands of the multicolored strips which came in biodegradable bags of course!

This is a very soft and heavy rug. The cashmere has gone through a felting process which makes it more durable, but still retains the softness associated with pure cashmere. Care tags and the occasional button are reminders of its origin.

Judging "Pushing the Limits"

Kea Carpets StoreSusan Gomersall and Azy Schecter of Kea Carpets and Kilims visited my studio in August to jury the entries for the annual Pushing the Limits: New Expressions in Hooked Art CD that Sherry Paisley and I produce each year. We spent an enjoyable day together and the jurors did an excellent job curating an exciting new group of work.

Both women are extremely knowledgeable and very interesting to speak with. Susan and Azy recently opened a new gallery in Hudson, NY called Kea on the Hudson. Stop by and see them if you are in the area. Hudson is an up and coming area with new and interesting shops.

Some Sad News

I have some sad news to pass along. My friend and partner in the Pushing the Limits shows, Sherry Paisley, lost her husband Tom at the beginning of September after a long illness. He will be greatly missed.

To Facebook or Not to Facebook - Feedback

Liz Rug Hooking

Are you curious about the feedback I received from the question I asked in the last newsletter - "is it worthwhile to be on Facebook?"

I was surprised by the response I received. The consensus was that it's fine to connect with friends, but as far as sharing my artwork, my time would be better spent working in the studio. Music to my ears!

Send in your question(s) so I can provide more answers in upcoming issues. I look forward to hearing from you, Liz.
