It was a busy summer. Most of it good, but Hurricane Irene's visit was a bit trying. We were without power for six days, but fortunate to escape with very little damage.

The BIG NEWS this month is the opening of the Beyond Rugs! exhibit on September 24 at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. This show represents the first time Hooked ART has been shown in a major art museum. When I arrived a day early, visitors were already asking if they could get into the show and it seemed like the whole town was buzzing about it!

A rather exclusive reception was held Friday night with only the participating artists, lenders, patrons and museum administration in attendance. It was held in the library upstairs from the gallery, which is a comfortable room with overstuffed chairs and a fireplace. Champagne and hors d'ouevre were served. The gallery was opened and all were treated to the unveiling of the show.

Me with my "Ring of Fire" on display in the Beyond Rugs! exhibit. |
I gave a presentation on the world of contemporary hooking entitled Contemporary Hooking: A Fine Art to an enthusiastic group. I showed the work of 29 artists from the United States, Canada, Australia, and England - 66 works of art in all. I used the following definition of Contemporary Hooked Art as my guidelines in choosing the work to be shown: "An original work of art designed and created by the artist which goes beyond the traditional use of the medium". I was interested in showing innovation and as much variety as possible.
For those not able to attend (the lecture was sold out!) and who are interested in seeing the presentation, the museum taped the event and will make it available on their web site. They also plan to produce a DVD. I will send out a notice and add links on my web site when these become available. I hope you will be as inspired as I was after viewing this incredible collection of work!
The exhibit itself is absolutely beautiful! Curators Millie Peladeau and Jane Bianco did an exceptional job. The artists are all pleased to see their work in such a professional setting. If you are able to make the trip, I highly recommend it! You can view the exhibit catalogue online here. The Farnsworth also has other wonderful exhibits going on and the quaint little town is full of great restaurants, interesting shops and galleries.
Enjoy this colorful season!
