Textile Art News from Liz Alpert Fay                               August 2011

Hello,

My daughter Chelsea and I hiked up Chimney Mountain in the central Adirondacks a few weeks ago. It was a steep climb right from the start. Interesting rock formations surrounded us at the summit, but we could only glimpse the distant mountains between the rocks, and there was nowhere to sit.

We quickly made the return trip down the same path we had struggled to climb. While we felt great after the physical challenge and the fresh mountain air, we decided the hike wasn't worth repeating in the future.

The next day I took my usual morning walk down the road I've been walking for years. I saw something black and shiny come out of the woods right in front of me. I soon realized that it was too large to be a dog and in the next moment I saw that it was a beautiful (baby) black bear! We were both really surprised and stared at each other for quite a long time. Eventually the bear decided to continue on its way, and ran back into the woods. Luckily its mama was nowhere to be seen!

The experience has stayed with me. I think about it every day. It was a moment in time that will never be repeated and I feel very privileged to have had the experience.

As I think about my adventures this summer, I have concluded that we often search for excitement and inspiration in unfamiliar places, when most often, life's greatest gifts are right in front of us.

I'm looking forward to returning to my studio. It's been a summer full of family, friends, travel and art show openings, and I'm looking forward to settling down to work again. Below you will find a few of the things I have planned for the coming year.

Hope you are also having an enjoyable summer.

Liz

 Sneak Peak at New Work

Here's a close-up sneak preview of a piece I'm currently working on in my studio. I am hooking with the waste from another artist's textile business. It's proving to be both fun and a challenge!

I look forward to showing you the finished product in a future newsletter.

 Upcoming Shows

At the Farnsworth Art Museum

 Spontaneous Stripe

 "Beyond Rugs" Opens September 24.

This is a historically significant show as it will be the first time that hooked art has been shown in a major art museum. The objects presented may be three dimensional, sculptural, hooked with unorthodox materials, or may incorporate mixed materials and techniques.

I will be giving a presentation the day the show opens - September 24. The working title of my talk is "Contemporary Hooking: A Fine Art". The show runs until February 5, 2012.

"Spontaneous Stripe," shown at left, will be included in the "Beyond Rugs" show.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show

I will be showing both my hooked art pieces and mixed media sculpture at this 35th Annual Craft Show that runs November 10 - 13 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.  A Preview Party will be held on November 9. The show website (linked above) includes photos and descriptions of the type of work I will have on display and for sale.

This premier show and sale of contemporary craft, includes 195 of the finest craft artists in the United States, selected from more than 1,400 applicants.

The show raises funds to purchase works of art and craft for the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to fund conservation and publication projects, and to support exhibitions and education programs.

I'm Glad You Asked!

To Facebook or Not to Facebook?

Liz Rug Hooking

That is my question for you.

In the last few weeks I've had four or five people ask me why I'm not on Facebook. My reply has been that I just don't have enough time to keep up with everything as it is. What I would really like is more time to do my artwork! This doesn't seem to be the right response however, because each of these people has given me a handful of good reasons why I should change my mind.

Please share your experiences and opinions with me. I look forward to hearing from you, Liz.
