Textile Art News from Liz Alpert Fay                                June 2011

Hello Again!

I hope you are enjoying my monthly newsletters. If you're not getting the news and information you expected and/or want, please let me know. You can email me anytime at liz@lizalpertfay.com. Let's make this a conversation.

Aron, my sonI am so proud of my son Aron who just graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) that I just had to share this photo of him working on his senior thesis project. It involved some very challenging technology! He graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and is absolutely one of my "masterpieces!"

See his work.

I also want to share with you a truly inspiring experience that I had on March 29th. I had the great pleasure of visiting "Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts" at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. It was truly spectacular!

Here's the background in brief: Daniel Rose, a real estate developer, asked his wife Joanna what she would like for her 80th birthday. She replied, "Something I've never seen before and a gift for New York City." She also mentioned that she had never seen her entire collection of red and white quilts (650 total) displayed together.

So, the couple rented the Armory for six days and hired Thinc Design to design and install the exhibit. The public was invited to attend free of cost. This photo provides a glimpse of the magnificent array.

I hope to see you at one of my upcoming shows! Read about them below.

Sincerely,

Liz

Smithsonian Show

The Smithsonian Craft Show was an incredible experience! For a long time I had dreamed of Smithsonian Showexhibiting at this prestigious event, and I have to say, I enjoyed every minute of it! As you can see, the National Building Museum is a spectacular place with columns several stories high and a beautiful central fountain that adds to the festive atmosphere. As always, I took pleasure in viewing the work of other artists, met many new and interesting visitors to thLiz with friend Janee show, and even made some new friends.

I was honored that my friend Jane Pollak made the long trip from CT (in the pouring rain) to visit me at the show! Take a look at her web site to see the interesting events she's involved in. You might want to participate! www.JanePollak.com

While in Washington DC I was fortunate to squeeze in a quick trip to the opening of "Green: The Color and the Cause" at the Textile Museum. I saw first hand the work of artists whose pieces I had only seen in photographs before, as well as some by artists who were new to me. There were a few pieces I would like to go back and see again as I didn't have the time to fully appreciate them.

I'm Glad You Asked!

Who is your favorite artist?

Liz Rug Hooking

Hands down, it's Alexander Calder. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's his large scale works, such as the outdoor sculpture at Storm King, his fine wire portraits, or the figures in the Circus at the Whitney, they all possess a carefree charm that I admire. I'm also intrigued by the rugs he designed for his wife to hook. The rugs covered most of the floors in their home in Paris.

My favorite place to view works by Calder is the National Gallery in Washington, DC. There is a circular room with a ceiling that is several stories high. Wire sculptures hang suspended from the ceiling at various heights. They move gently in the breeze casting incredible shadows across the walls. The museum has placed benches below where you can sit and view the work. It is truly a wondrous place!

I also love the paintings of Emily Carr. A few years ago I was obsessed with finding out as much as I could about her, borrowing books from libraries all across Connecticut. She painted the deep woods in British Columbia.

I also enjoy Andy Goldworthy's installations. I was fortunate to hear him speak at Yale a number of year's ago. I thought he couldn't possibly be a good speaker because his work is so incredible, but he was amazing!
