Update from Institutional Outreach
It seems the Workforce Training Division is no different than others who are reinventing themselves because of the bad economy. We too are finding that we must find different niches as many companies are scaling back on training. We are finding that short-term training such as Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy and Truck Driver Training are proving to be popular as there are good job opportunities in our region in these fields. In Community Education we are seeing some long standing courses cancelled which seems to be a reflection of the economy. While some classes struggle we are turning to new trends such as the Zumba fitness class which has abundant interest. We will continue to develop new short-term training options and seek new trends to survive the economic downturn. There have been some changes in the Bailey Center move. There will be four mobile units which will house the ACTION Center, Admissions, Financial Aid and the Business Office. The units should arrive shortly. College Administration will move to the Bevill Building. Some will be in place this week. Dr. Hawsey and her staff will be located on the 7th floor of the Bevill Building. Vice President's Smith and Cleveland and their staff will be housed on the 1st floor of the Bevill Building and should be in place by Thursday, September 9th. Malinda Morton and I will be located on the 4th floor of the Bevill Building by Thursday, September 9th. Human Resources will be located in the HGA Building (Math Building). I will keep you informed as the project continues. Melinda Edwards Dean of Institutional Outreach

Fast Facts
The 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement found that more than 40% of the 190,000 college seniors surveyed were transfers. And as tuitions soar, more and more students are opting to save thousands by starting at community colleges and later transferring to four-year institutions. (Source)

Wallace State gains donation to genealogy collection
HANCEVILLE--Prominent Southern genealogical writer Dorothy Williams Potter has donated 200 books from her personal library to the Family & Regional History Program of Wallace State Community College, Hanceville. Ms. Potter, a resident of Birmingham, has published eleven books of her own. She chose to make this contribution because she has participated in the research and history sightseeing trips that Wallace State's genealogy program has made in past years and as a resource for the classes in family history offered at the college.
