Update from Institutional Outreach
Summer is a time for fun, water sports, grilling, sunning and just enjoying life. I remember when I was young, how summer seemed so long. Now it seems to get shorter and shorter. Kids these days seek some sort of activity or stimulation while they are off for summer break. The week of June 14-18th approximately 60 middle school students will find plenty of activity as they will be on campus for our annual Summer Youth College. The ever popular Crime Scene Investigation and Cake Decorating classes top the list with Act Your Part, Clay Fun and Powerful PowerPoint giving these students a fun look into programs at Wallace State. Who would have thought that Social Media would play such a huge role not only in our social lives but also in fundraising, building business clientele and in politics? Facebook for Professionals which was held last evening was quick to fill as real estate agents, politicians and marketers called to take advantage of the course. I expect that we will be doing many more of these classes as well as advanced social media classes in the future as it is recognized more as a powerful tool not only for social use but professional endeavors. Also, look for several new Continuing Education classes this fall. Speaking of fall, I am working on plans to relocate Bailey Center occupants to other areas of campus for the Bailey Center repair. Please be patient with us as we kindly ask you to share space with us. If all plans go well we will be in our new spaces by the second week in September so that repairs can begin on our 12 story giant. June will mark the end of Patty Dean's time with us. June 30th is expected to be her last day as she heads into retirement. We will miss her pleasant personality at the Library as many of us grew up with her there. Congratulations Patty! Enjoy your summer! ~Melinda Edwards
