Two-Year College System to Raise the Roof For Haiti -
Montgomery - State Board of Education members and college presidents joined Dr. Freida Hill on Thursday to announce a system-wide effort to help rebuild Haiti.
"The RAISE the ROOF for Haiti campaign will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Haiti, a program that has been building sturdy, small homes in Haiti for the past quarter-century," the chancellor said. "We are inviting employees, students and partners of all our institutions and the Department of Postsecondary Education to participate in this campaign."
Division Update - Student Services
Welcome to Spring semester 2010, a time when our student body is now close to 6500 strong. Wallace State has always been known for its excellence, whether in programs, or students, and this semester will be no different. In just the recent past, we have been fortunate to have a Jack Kent Cooke scholar, Chelsea Allen; a New Century Scholar, Austin Monk; a VICA national champion in welding, Joey Foster; national champion runner-up cheerleading squad; and national champion runner-up softball team, and that is just a few of our student accomplishments! Opportunities to learn, lead and grow abound at Wallace State. We focus on students and because we do, the recent tragic news at UAH saddens us and causes us to reassess our safety and security measures on our campus. We will soon be offering text messaging notification for students. A campus alert system, updated exterior lighting, cameras and safety workshops are being explored. Related to this, I will be holding seminars beginning this semester concerning our Code of Conduct and integrity issues for students to further emphasize a safe campus atmosphere. We are dedicated to students and their success. For this semester and beyond, our Student Services Division looks forward to working with Wallace State students, staff and our communities to provide the best learning experiences possible. - Dr. Tomesa Smith
Fast Facts
The Wallace State student body is 64% female, 36% male.
27% of WSCC students are age 30 and older.
A note about Campus Safety
I know you have all heard about the tragic shooting that occurred at UAH. Sadly, these kinds of tragic events are occurring more frequently in today's troubled society. As you know, we are an open campus, as are all college campuses, and our best preventative is awareness and preparation. We should always be aware of our surroundings, immediately report any suspicious behavior or safety concerns to campus security, call 911 immediately if you ever feel you are in danger and then notify campus security/administration of potential emergency situations, and please reacquaint yourself and your department with the Campus Emergency Procedures. While these kinds of events are oftentimes unpredictable and random, sometimes they are preceded by incidents with troubled/angry/disturbed people. In the event you ever have a concern about the mental/emotional stability of a student/employee/visitor/others that could impact campus safety, you should report it to campus security and your vice president immediately so that we can take appropriate precautions. Join me in prayers for the UAH family. -VPH
Strategic Planning SPOL Software
2010-2011 strategic plans are due by the end of February.
Administrative Council Elections
The Administrative Council is responsible for making recommendations to the President's Cabinet concerning prioritization of budget requests and planning objectives for departmental units. Nominations are open for the following positions: one (1) technical faculty, one (1) academic faculty, one (1) health faculty, two (2) support staff (E-Schedule), and one (1) professional staff (C-Schedule). Art Exhibit Continues through Friday
The Wallace State Art Department will host the next Year of the Arts event -- "A Visual Exploration of the Events and Science of the Night the Stars Fell on Alabama" -- in the lobby of the Burrow Center February 12 through February 19.The title of the exhibition refers to the Leonid meteor shower that was observed in Alabama Nov. 12-13, 1833, when more than 30,000 meteors an hour reportedly rained across the Earth's atmosphere lighting up the night sky. The event inspired the still popular 1934 jazz standard, which has kept the phrase alive. The art exhibition is open to the public daily during the college's regular hours of operation. Admission to the exhibition and reception are free. For more information call x8145.
WSCC Electronic Mail Policy and Procedures
WSCC has established email as the recognized means for sending official information to students, faculty, and staff. It is the responsibility of all faculty, staff, and students to check their College email on a frequent and consistent basis and to understand that they are not absolved from the responsibilities associated with the contents of electronic communications if the communications are not received and read on a timely basis.

Wallace State's Career Services Center will be allowed to nominate 8 students to be interviewed for a student work program within the AMCOM organization of Redstone Arsenal. These are well paying jobs ($12.14 - 13.63 per hour), that will provide "meaningful assignments" and Lunch and Learn Sessions. We assume these positions were created to peak students' interest in AMCOM careers. Therefore, the students selected may benefit long-term from working in these assignments. We have been given a very quick turnaround time and need your help to identify students with initiative, drive, motivation and a grade point average of 3.0. The student must be committed to working 2 months and have transportation to get to work. The students must develop a resume* and successfully complete a selection interview with AMCOM's management. If you will identify possible nominees and refer them to Career Services (for the AMCOM Student Employment Program), we can help them to create a resume that will meet AMCOM's requirements and create an account, in Perfect Interview, where they can practice their interview skills. The students must be currently enrolled at Wallace State and there is a possibility their assignment could qualify for Cooperative Education Credit.
