Division Update - Institutional Outreach
 
Institutional Outreach is busy working on the 2010-2011 catalog which will be available in print and online this summer. Changes to the catalog should be submitted to the appropriate Dean or Vice President.  
 
Graduation will be here before we know it!  The Commencement ceremony is scheduled for May 14 at 6:00 pm.  Rehearsal will be held on April 28th at 10:00 am in the Tom Drake Coliseum.  Cap and gown measurement dates are March 15th & 16th from 10:00 am-5:00 pm in the Bailey Center Lobby.  Applications for graduation are due by February 1st in the Cashier's Office.  This year our students will wear "green'' gowns which are made of 100% post-consumerrecycled plasticbottles.   This is just another part of our green initiative on campus.
 
We are excited to participate in the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  Over the next few months our employees and students will be holding fundraising activities and participating in the Relay for Life event on May 7th and 8th.  Those interested in participating should contact me at extension 8172.

Chancellor's Visit
Dr. Freida H. Hill, Chancellor of the Community College System, will visit our campus on Thursday, February 4. In preparation for Chancellor Hill's visit and campus tour, please make sure your areas are clean and orderly.  She will have the opportunity to walk through many, if not all, class and lab areas. We will have an all employee meeting and reception beginning at 1:30 p.m.  If you would like to provide information about you, your accomplishments, and/or your challenges, please email that information to Dr. Hawsey by early Tuesday morning.
 
Glenn Miller Orchestra Kicks Off Year of the Arts with Performances Feb. 4-5 
Wallace State is celebrating the Year of the Arts in 2010.  Tickets are on sale now for The Glenn Miller Orchestra concert on February 4 at 7 p.m. in the Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre.  $15 advance purchase, $20 at the door.  Discounts for students and employees may be available.  On February 5, The Glenn Miller Orchestra returns for an evening of dinner and dancing under the lights in the Burrow Center's main hall, sponsored by the Wallace State Future Foundation.  Tickets are available for the dance only for $25.  For more information, visit www.wallacestate.edu/yoa or call Suzanne Harbin at x8144.

United Way
If you would like to donate to the United Way through payroll deduction, please contact Wayne Manord at x8116.  If you are currently contributing to the United Way, your contribution will not change unless you request a change.  United Way of Cullman County supports 17 local agencies.  Please contact Wayne if you would like more information.
 
Running Wild
The WSCC Alumni Association and the Cullman Running Club are sponsoring the "Running Wild Half Marathon, 5K, and 1 mile Fun Run" events on Saturday, April 3.  If you would like to participate in the race or volunteer to help out, contact Suzanne Harbin or Stacey Moore.
 
Sigma Kappa Delta Fundraiser
Sigma Kappa Delta will be holding a fundraiser on today, February 2 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Student Center.  Give $1 and wear a ribbon to show your support for victims of the earthquakes in Haiti.

Common Read
The Common Read Committee has chosen The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne to be read campus-wide next fall.  If you would like a free copy of the book, please notify Diana Majerik, diana.majerik@wallacestate.edu, by February 26.
 
ADA Handbook 
The "College Students with Disabilities: A Guide for Faculty and Staff" handbook is currently being revised.  If you have questions to be included in the Q & A section of the handbook, please email those to Lisa Harris.

Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers will hold an informational meeting today, February 2 at 4:30 p.m. on JBC 4th floor.  Cost for the 15-week "At Work" program is $150, which can be divided over three months. 
 
Summer 2010
The college will return to a four-day work week this summer.  Scheduling for classes and office hours for summer semester should reflect this change.  Contact your appropriate supervisor, dean or vice-president with questions.
 
Athletics Update
Make plans to attend the first home baseball game of the season, February 6 at 1 p.m. vs. Columbia State (Tenn.).  The men's basketball team scored another win vs. Bevill State.  Both men's and women's teams travel to Gadsden State tonight.  Congratulations to the softball team for their Number 2 National Ranking!

Relay for Life
If you would like to participate in the college's Relay for Life fundraising effort, please contact Melinda Edwards at x8172.  The Relay for Life event is scheduled for May 7-8.   

YouTube EDU
Wallace State's YouTube page now has a new look. Our YouTube page has recently been upgraded to a YouTube EDU channel that allows for longer video uploads to accommodate course material and lectures. Check it out at www.youtube.com/wallacestate  

AHSAA Regional Tournament 
The 2010 AHSAA Regional Basketball Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, February 16 - Saturday, February 20.  Thanks in advance to all who volunteer and make it possible for this to be a successful event that attracts several thousand prospective students to the WSCC campus.  If you have questions or want to join the effort for the first time, contact Sid Borden at x8213. 

Lion Card
The WSCC Lion Card is now accepted at CVS in Hanceville, Woody's Grill, Backyard Burger, and KFC locations in Hanceville and Cullman. 
 
Career Fair
Please mark your calendars for the 2010 Career Fair events on March 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the coliseum.  For more information, contact Darlene Huff at x8133.

Health Fair
Make plans to attend the 2010 Health Fair on February 10 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the JBC Lobby.  Free health screenings, chair massages, door prizes and food will be available. 
 
Attendance Verification
Just a reminder that AV is now active for Title IV Financial Aid recipients (Loan) for this  semester.  It will remain active until Monday, February 8, 2010 at  10:00 a.m.  PLEASE complete your AV by this date to assist Financial Aid in compiling loan balance checks to be ready for disbursement on Thursday, February 11, 2010.
 
Andrew Yeager's interview with Chancellor Hill at WBHM on January 21
Chancellor Freida Hill has been on the job two months. Hill spent 18 years working for Georgia's technical colleges. But in Alabama she steps into a system facing increased enrollment with shrinking budgets, plus lingering fallout from a corruption scandal. Hill spoke to WBHM's Andrew Yeager about some of those issues as well as her goals for the state's two year college system. Wallace State-Hanceville's baseball team opens the 2010 season Friday in a tournament set aside for some of the elite junior college programs in the South.  The Lions are participating in the inaugural Gulf Coast First Pitch Classic at the campus of Gulf Coast Community College in Panama, City, Fla.
 
Wallace State Community College in Hanceville hosted its annual Transfer Fair in the lobby of the James C. Bailey Center on Thursday for current Wallace State students interested in transferring to a four-year institution.
 
The Transfer Fair, which was sponsored by Wallace State's Student Activities Department, attracted approximately 100 students to the information booths of 17 colleges and universities.
