ESI International Travel and Services
After recently relocating to North Carolina after working for many years in ESI's Jacksonville, Florida headquarters, Caitlin Sellers became a full-time member of the Forestry, Carbon and Greenhouse Gases Division (FCGD) team. Her first project involved a trip to Kenya. Sellers and fellow team member Shawn McMahon traveled to Kenya in August 2011 to serve as the validation and verification team hired to "audit" a project site against the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community, & Biodiversity Standard (CCB).
ESI is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under ISO 14065:2007 for GHG Validation and Verification Bodies, which allows them to validate and verify greenhouse gas (GHG) assertions for VCS and CCB, in addition to several others. Their objective in Kenya was to review the documents of the project, interview all the stakeholders involved, and field-check the relevant monitoring that had been done to confirm compliance with VCS and CCB. This process is a required step for any carbon offset project to be approved and for carbon credits to be sold on the carbon market.
Sellers shares, "This project is part of a new emerging global market that has begun to grow within the last few years. The worldwide initiative to reduce GHG emissions and prevent climate change has caused many countries to voluntarily and/or mandatorily purchase carbon credits."
