Celebrate Forests. Celebrate Life
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests (IYOF) to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. The theme of the U.S. campaign is "Celebrate Forests. Celebrate Life."
IYOF is a global platform to celebrate people's actions to sustainably manage the world's trees and forests. The objectives are to reverse loss of forest cover, enhance economic, social and environmental benefits, increase areas of sustainably managed forests, and to mobilize increased financial resources.
Sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service, the official U.S. campaign is focused on why trees and forests are important to Americans, and why our citizens should care about their upkeep, health and survival.
The overarching goals are to:
- Increase awareness of and elevate the conversation about the importance of trees and forests in the U.S. and the benefits they provide.
- Celebrate people's actions to sustainably manage forests.
- Raise awareness of sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests to new audiences. (Source: http://www.celebrateforests.com/about-year-forests)
