PROVIDING SUPERIOR SOLUTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL, NATURAL, CULTURAL AND SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE NEEDS
ESI's ANSI Accreditation (ISO 14065:2007) Accepted By CarbonFix

ESI's ANSI accreditation under ISO 14065:2007 for Greenhouse Gas Validation and Verification Bodies is now accepted by the CarbonFix Standard. This will allow ESI to verify projects according to the CarbonFix Standard.

CarbonFix is a leading Standard for climate forestation projects. Its aim is to increase the amount of sustainably managed forests to decrease the levels of global atmospheric CO2. Projects certified according to the CarbonFix Standard are known for their high social and ecological engagements. The criteria of the Standard hereby follow the principles of the WWF, in that projects must be real and unique, additional, measurable, permanent, are independently verified and have sustainable development benefits.

The criteria of the Standard was developed by the technical board of the association CarbonFix together with over 60 other forestry and development aid organizations worldwide. In 2010, the standard was evaluated as being the most robust and transparent standard available for climate forestation projects in the voluntary carbon market. (Source: CarbonFix)

ESI had previously received accreditation from American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under ISO 14065:2007 for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies. The scope of accreditation includes ISO 14065:2007, ISO 14064-3:2006, and verification/validation of assertions related to greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals at the project level for Land Use and Forestry (Group 3). To achieve the accreditation, ESI successfully completed an exhaustive review and assessment process during which the firm demonstrated specialized credentials to provide independent and impartial validation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Read our ANSI press release >>>

There are only 20 ANSI accredited (ISO 14065:2007) validation and verification bodies total globally. In addition, ESI is one of five companies that is accredited by ANSI for validation and verification of assertions related to GHG emissions reductions and removals at the project level for the Land Use and Forestry (Group 3).

With this recent CarbonFix accreditation, ESI now possess eight  select certifications that establish ESI as a leader in the environmental field. These accreditations are: (American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Climate Action Registry (CAR), CarbonFix, American Carbon Registry (ACR), Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA), and Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT).

Water Quality Standards

ESI's Shannon Julien, a Volusia/Flagler Business Report's 2009 Young Business Leaders, recently presented WATER QUALITY STANDARDS: The History, The Current Discussions, and Potential Costs to the Volusia County Association of Responsible Development.

Presentation introduction: Most of the development professionals know that Water Quality Standards are coming but it seems that many of our governmental officials/politicians are not quite up to speed on what this may mean to his/her community.  This is not their fault, the issue has been looming since approximately 2002 and many have lost sight of exactly where things stand.  Therefore, I will present where we have been, where we are today, and what this means in terms of standards and potential costs.

Listed Species Rule Changes in Florida

Listed Species rule changes are coming for Florida. In September, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved the first round of a set of new rules for managing listed species in Florida.  The Commission began the revisions to the rules to resolve confusion and controversy over how listed species were listed.  The new system is designed to focus attention on what measures are needed to conserve threatened and endangered species, rather than on how the species are categorized.

Under the new rules, all Florida listed species will be in a single category called "threatened." The rules will streamline the process and provide a holistic management system that includes conservation actions and goals, public outreach, research, policy, incentives and enforcement components that are necessary to manage and conserve Florida's wildlife.

Commission biologists are currently conducting scientific reviews of all species currently on Florida's lists.  Based on the findings of these reviews, the staff will make recommendations to the Commission about the future listing of these species. The next step in the process will begin in Spring 2011 and will involve a public process to create management plans and strategies for recovery.

For more information about these rule changes in Florida, please contact Cara Connolly, Shannon Julien or Mary Lindgren at Environmental Services, Inc.
