Why the different helmet prices?
Greetings!

Have you looked at the price of helmets lately? There can be as much as $130.00 difference between the high-end helmet and the low-end helmet!
  • How do you choose?
  • Is the pricey one SAFER than the low cost one?
  • Does size matter?

In this newsletter, I will explain how helmets are constructed and how that impacts the cost, as well as the safety and size issues.

Hard-Shell
Construction types:
Hard-Shell ABS Helmet Construction
  • Are made by gluing a pre-formed thick ABS plastic shell to a pre-molded liner of EPS foam (a stiff Styrofoam material).
  • Tend to be a little heavier.
  • Offer less venting capabilities.
  • Meets required safety certifications.
  • Is more budget friendly.

In-Mold Helmet Construction

In-Mold Shell
  • Are made by molding the ABS plastic shell and the stiff foam liner simultaneously, fusing them together.
  • Usually are lighter weight.
  • Offer more venting options, due to the construction technique.
  • Meets required safety certifications.
  • Are pricier.

If you would like to read an extremely in depth article about the development of the current safety regulations, the ASTM F 2040 that is used today, I found this article by Mitch Weber. Read Ski Helmets

The purpose of helmets: Safety Note
A helmet's main goal is to protect the wearers head from one moderate to heavy impact. An important note here is; if the helmet displays any injury such as a crack or compression, it must be replaced. It is far better that the helmet sustained the damage than your head. But once a helmet is compromised, it cannot protect you as well as before.
Size does matter:                                         Watch Our video
Helmet You TubeEspecially when fitting a helmet
  • Helmets are sized by their exterior shell size; Small, Medium, Large, etc.
  • Measure your head with a soft tape measure or a string and use our Helmet Sizing Chart
  • To customize the fit use the movable fit pads supplied with the helmet. The higher-end helmets may use a rotary dial system.

A proper fitting helmet should rest on the top of your head. It should sit down onto your forehead, just above the eyebrows. There should be just enough room to slip on a pair of goggles or sunglasses.

A good way to judge a proper fit is to:

  1. Put on your helmet and snug the dial system if you have it.
  2. The chin strap should be snug enough to get 1-2 fingers through at the throat.
  3. Now shake your head rapidly from side to side as if you are saying "No".

If your helmet moves on you head, it is too loose. You either need to add more padding or get a smaller size. If your helmet is too tight, you need to remove some of the removable padding or get a larger size. Never carve out part of the EPS foam liner. The helmet will not be able to protect you as it should.

So now, the big question:
If All helmets meet safety regulations, why such a price difference?
  • Helmet construction: In-mold vs Hard-shell
  • Vents; how many & type
  • Fit system: pads vs dial
  • Liner

As helmets become more accepted with skiers and boarders, helmet manufactures are making improvements. Besides the obvious cosmetics, options are now offered in better fitting methods, better venting systems and better lining material. The higher-end helmet liners now have anti-microbial material to combat mildew and odor, material that is wicking to control moisture, and even have fibers built in to help regulate heat.

The newest improvement is in the venting. Helmet users were always impaired with goggles fogging. Manufacturers now have added vents at the front of the helmet to assist air flow to the goggles. Yeah!!

So it all boils down to your budget. Will you be happy with a basic helmet? Or, will you justify the higher-end and get the bells and whistles? After all, you will be wearing this helmet for several years.
