Greetings!
One of the greatest parts of working at TMU is the fact that no matter the season, the month, the day, if offices are closed, or if it is after business hours, our grantees are out making a difference. Working practically around the clock, it is for their (your!) unwavering dedication that we are thankful this holiday season.
Each TMUniverse newsletter highlights a few grantees and projects per month. In that regard, this newsletter is not much different than any other. As we kick off a new year, we want to make this newsletter special and send our thanks to all grantees for your work, dedication, and accomplishments. With each report we receive, we are able to see the real impact of your programs: communication, understanding, and collaboration.
Thank you and happy New Year! Best wishes, Jennifer, Carrie, Barbara, Alina, and Josh

Under the Radar Festival
Two TMU grantees will be performing at the Under the Radar Festival this January: the Belarus Free Theatre, performing Being Harold Pinter, and Betontanc, performing Show Your Face!.
The Belarus Free Theatre was established in 2005 by Natasha Koliada and Nikolai Khalezin as an open expression of artistic freedom in an environment of government pressure and censorship. Recently, hundreds of people were arrested in the center of Minsk as they peacefully protested the December presidential elections in Belarus. Among them were Natasha and Nikolai. For more information, see our blog and a note from Catherine Coray.
Betontanc was founded in 1990 in Ljubljana by theatre director Matjaz Pograjc who brought together musicians, dancers, actors, and costume and stage designers. The company's work explores the physicality of the human body and its correspondence with elements which bind the freedom of movement. |

U Street Please join us for a discussion of a new book, Washington's U Street: A Biography, by our very own Blair Ruble, Director of the Kennan Institute. U Street "traces the history of the U Street neighborhood in Washington, D.C., from its Civil War-era origins to its recent gentrification. Home throughout the years to important scholars, entertainers, and political figures, as well as to historically prominent African American institutions, Washington's U Street neighborhood is a critical zone of contact between black and white America."- January 26th, 5:30pm-7:00pm
